Yep I heard that about Grand Companies and WvWvW too. (Ooops, I mean GC v GC v GC.)

I'm still not sure it's enough to influence the choice of a GC at launch... sounds like it's a ways off. And since it impacts GC choice, maybe they will give us and easy way to change when this feature is launched. For example. a free company GC affiliation in addition to our personal affiliation.
Do you guys think we should all join the same one?
I am unclear on the difference between a Free Company (FC) and Grand Company(GC). Can someone explain the difference? I know that Ecohes is the FC we are trying to make when game launches, but what is a GC?
A grand company is a faction you can choose to join once you reach a certain point in the story quest, at level 20. You get to pick a GC affiliated with one of the three main cities, Ul'dah, Gridania or Limsa Lominsa (or as Connor would say, Luma Luminosity :P).
You are then able to complete company leves and gain company seals when you do FATES, company quests or kill mobs named in the company hunting log. This includes some mobs in dungeons.
You can even hand in certain items in need to the company quartermaster, in return for seals.
Seals are a form of company currency, and may be handed in to advance your rank with the GC, or to purchase items from the company quartermaster. As you advance in rank, higher level weapons, armour and chocobo barding (armour), potions and other items become available to you.
Each company's headquarters are found in its corresponding city.
In effect, it is FFXIV's equivalent of a rep grind.
This is different from a free company, which is FFXIV's equivalent to a guild.

I don't think GC (aka faction) choice will make much difference in the short term, and they've said there will be a way to change your GC later. However I guess it wouldn't hurt to have a "default" faction for Echoes, for folks who otherwise don't care.
I'd suggest Ul'dah / Flame, because that seems to be the one most folks choose anyway.
Looks like you can change eventually, it will come down to how much you want to travel around the zones.
Thanks to the link to the Mr. Happy video, that did explain a lot for me.
I like the guy's videos (and I've watched a few of them) but he really needs to redecorate his bedroom and make his bed before he films!
Travel is fun in this game! So many cool places! And my little 5 day stint only showed me the tip of the iceberg.
