Very much depends on the tweaks they do between now and launch. I've always played the Assassin/Rogue/Thief style professions but I'm leaning toward Engineer/Guardian/Warrior/Ranger now.

What sort of playstyle are you looking for? Playstyle of the class AND your personal style can weigh heavily into your decision. Another question is what sort of feel are you looking for in WvW? I know that sounds odd, but how a character feels inspires me in class choices in this game. Certain moments stuck out to me during BWEs and shaped how I view a class. These experiences are part of why I am still trying to choose between Engineer, Ranger, or Elementalist. Your decision is likely to be made harder because all the classes are so versatile and can fit so many different roles. I'll never forget my tiny elementalist caught alone on a road as an enemy group approached, holding out best I could, at a sliver of health and ready to type Goodbye Cruel Wor.. and then suddenly seeing this amazonian Norn guardian suddenly appear at my side. She was HUGE, planted her shield and placed a dome shield over both us for a few seconds that felt like an eternity. Allowed me to heal back up and together we held the road for the minute it took for reinforcements to arrive and chase them off. Guardians will always look heroic to me because of that one moment in WvW. Or being in a group and fearing a single Ranger longbow sniper using the rocky terrain and nailing us one by one from max range to maximize the damage bonus. Or watching my sweetie's first experience of WvW on a necro and watching that necro take on 2 others all by kiting and dropping traps across a distance. So many stories like these have helped me try to find a class that fits how I want MY story to feel in Tyria. I know that isn't the best number crunchy sort of advice for choosing a class but, to me, the experience is the thing! -niri

Id have to agree with Niri on what type of playstlye you want to play? Though I would not limit it to just any one class. For surviveability not certain, group play? Support? WvW? PvP? Paper Cannon? There are several things to consider upon this. Try out several before picking something or I am certain that there is a ton of videos/suggestions out there on what to try. All in all it will be what you want to play:)

I have thought and thought about this and I really am thinking my "Kirleen" main toon will go necro. What little I have seen the really nice thing about GW2 is how the classes are set up. That was a HUGE revelation to me. It really does seem (at this point and time - before game opening) that it will matter most that you match up with a class that fits your play style so that you have a chance to use your style to add to the team. (If that made sense). I am so "old school" in my raiding (in that I would always be a "support" class) but that really isn't how GW2 classes are. So yeah, I am looking at my main GW2 toon for now being a necro so that I can have her work "okay-fine" out in PvE and in WvWvW stuff. (At least that is what I am leaning to at this moment). I don't think that any one class will outshine the others, it will depend on how well you know what your options are within the class you want to play and how well you can play (and enjoy) that class. There is nothing worse than being on a class for some huge event/raid and just hating that you are on that class. (This I know from being an "Enchanter" for our guild on EverQuest, back in the day, when what I really wanted to do was put out tons of damage and kill stuff, not be the one hiding and counting down the seconds until I had to refresh my mesmerize over and over and over.) Heehee.

Elth - I got obliterated 1v1 by a Thief on my warrior yesterday in WvW during the stress test. I had all my cooldowns too. Either that guy's been eating his wheaties or something has been improved for Thief recently. @ Kirleen, I hear ya - I raided with a Necro in Everquest. ;) The only time I got off power passing duty was to summon a corpse, lol. Necro is really good in this game, and as Tirean say, they are really problematic for melee classes in WvW... too many DOTs! They have some other nice tricks too. I played one for the first two beta weekends and ran a support build through Ascalon Catacombs - healing, buffing and removing debuffs using "wells". It felt a bit like playing an EQ shammy. :) Minion Master is another option. So really nice variety in the possible builds.

I know from previous games (and my own attitude) that I prefer to defend - more than I do assault. I look at movies that had great keep defenses such as "Lord of the Rings - Return of the King" and "Kingdom of Heaven" and totally realize I love defending - so that is how I pick and play my characters - the Elementalist and the Engineer. Give me big AOE abilities and I am ecstatic - give me Meteor showers and Lava Fonts... Grenades and Bombs - and I am a happy camper. As others have pointed out - there is great verstility with all of the professions - pick one or two - or three - that make you feel good - and enjoy yourself.

I'll reserve the final judgement for when I have played the game proper in its final release state, but right now, I'll probably go either Guardian or Engineer for WvWvW. I like to play as support, and those two classes are the best support classes right now in the game, judging from the skills and traits.

For me, I've always liked dealing damage and playing WvW or PVP on other games. From experience I've learned that melee is extremely challenging and difficult to master in WvW. When it's zerg v zerg melee suffers because they're most effective at a range where they get AOE'd to hell and back. I was planning on playing a Ranger or Ele in the Betas and Stress Tests. So far I've only played Ranger because I've fell in love with the class. I love dealing damage at range, with good mobility, and the battle in front of me. The pet mechanic is just an added bonus. It's funny, even though I know this is my main class and I may try an Ele or Warrior alt, my build has evolved through stress tests and BWE's. My first build was Longbow/Axe-torch. I suddenly realized that for longbow to be effective I need to be at 1200-1500 range and for axe/torch to be effective I need to be at 900 or less range. They just didn't work well together in WVW, although it was quite powerful in PVE. Then they nerfed the longbow and the greatsword and condition builds became king. I decided to try the shortbow with axe/torch. Although I loved the short bow skills and it synergized well with axe/torch I still found myself a little bit to close to the zerg for my liking and constantly dodging out of AOE hell. The next evolution was with the trait changes. At first I was wanting to go exclusively with traps. Again the short range(600 for ground targetted traps) changed my mind. Then I decided to try Spirits until they got nerfed down to ineffective. That plan was scrapped as well. I read the theories on what currently goes into calculating critical damage. It looks like the formula relies heavily on both power and critical as well as your ability to stack might and vulnerability. Finally, I've settled on a build that FITS MY PLAYSTYLE: lots of damage from range(1200-1500). Longbow/Shortbow with a focus on power/crits. Yes, the shortbow is a condition weapon and the longbow is a direct damage weapon. I use the shortbow more as a control weapon with two ranged cripples, a heal debuff, a kickback move, and a flanking move that stacks bleeds. My crits will still land with shortbow so it seems to work and with longbow I can push my distance out even further to start hitting people before they can even hit me. I get piercing weapons on both weapons with just one trait and get shorter cooldown on both weapons with another trait. Another thing to consider is this: who are you going to be playing with the most? My brother and I play together every time were on so we try to create characters that help each other out along the way. We're both going to end up as longbow/shortbow rangers(the apple doesn't fall far from the tree). I guess what I'm trying to say is this: figure out what role you want to play, because the builds of GW2 will allow you to find and play exactly how you want. Then don't be surprised if that changes again and again as they continue to balance the game. Think about who you might be grouping with, what size that group is going to be, and what your main role is going to be to contribute to the greater good. The best tool that this game has is pug PVP, where you can go in and try your level 80 character, all the utilities, all the top end gear, all the elite skills....They give you a chance to learn what you like at an early level and then build your character around that idea. The best advice was given in the thread above this. Figure out your play style and then experiment with your builds until it feels like you.

Funny thing, RedHugh. On my ranger I actually made the same weapon selection. The longbow/shortbow combo works out well together, I feel. The long bow has some pretty decent damage, and when all my abilities are on cool down, I will immidietly switch to shortbow for the faster attack rate, plus the abilty to re-widen the gap between me and my opponents. I used my ranger very effectively in pvp yesterday, and really enjoyed it. That said, I am still not actually settled on who I want to play. I want to give a bow/greatsword warrior a shot. I want to give a sword/dagger + pistol/pistol thief a shot. I got my engineer to 10 as pistol/pistol, using at various times the grenade kit, or the flame thrower kit as well. However, the engy seems to be fairly weaker than my other chars.
