Some of the family were talking about this in GameVox last night so I decided to dive a little deeper into it. IMO this is a pretty wonderful change for PVE game modes and should add a lot of diversity to the builds we can bring to the party.
Developer thread: https://forum-en.guildwars2.com/forum/game/hot/Upcoming-Global-Change-to-Player-Minions
TL;DR summary of the change:
- Only in PVE
- Afffects all player minions and pets, including less "pet-y" things like spirit weapons, elementals, ranger spirits, gyros, turrets, etc.
- Damage taken (direct or condition) is only 5% of normal. Goal, per the devs: "instead of killing it instantly, it will slowly attrition it down."
- EXCEPT when a creature specifcally targets your minion/pet. Then it takes full damage
Some examples:
- You are out in the PVE world on your ranger and your pet is tanking a mob for you. It takes full damage.
- Your party is stacked in a corner in fractal and an enemy cleaves the party. The ranger's pet, the engi's turrets, and the mesmer's phantasms all take only 5% damage
- You have a ranger spirit out in a raid that has mega AoEs going off all over the place. It takes only 5% damage
