Background: I quit the game back before Lion's Arch was destroyed - let alone rebuilt. I have a level 80 character and I had finished all the exploration objectives (all the "find stuff on the map" things). I quit due to dungeons lacking the trinity-style, strategic gameplay. What would it take to get back into the game and up to speed now? Also, what is the raiding content in the xpac going to be like without the trinity?

I'm mostly a pve guy but I joined the guild in wvw occasionally. I don't go out of my way to pvp though because I really stink at it.

Welcome back! I'd like to invite you to make a new level 80 since megaservers, F2P and HoT have increased activity in all maps giving returning players the perfect opportunity to go through the game again to get reacquainted with it and to adjust to changes the game has gone through.

If you prefer to stick with your current main you could quickly check out some ready builds in websites (i.e. http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Ranger_-_A/T_Condition) or have an in depth discussion with members of the family on builds to cater to your play style.

Farming for gold & Magic find has never been easier with new content such as Silver Wastes.  Fractal dungeons have found greater prominence due to incoming HoT changes (i.e. legendary crafting) and SoR WvW/EotM is currently a kinder place and one of the fastest places to level with GSCH run events multiple times per week.

> what is the raiding content in the xpac going to be like without the trinity?

I don't think raids in GW2 will be as simplistic as tank-heal-dps.  Just like in dungeons/fractals, folks will be responsible to move and dodge at the right times and in the right ways.  Fields will still need to be finished upon for self-healing and buffing.  And DPS will be needed too, of course.

Beyond that, we'll need someone in the raid to do [something helpful] at particular points in the fight.  And all classes are able to do some of those helpful things.  So my guess is it will be much more about really knowing the fights, coordination and willingness to do whatever [helpful] needs doing -- not a specific class makeup.  Your raid just has to have its [helpful] tasks covered:

  • interact with encounter-specific items or mechanics
  • if not tanking, Taunting (a new mechanic) at the right time
  • reflecting or otherwise managing projectiles
  • breaking breakbars or defiance
  • clearing conditions and stuns for the raid
  • buffing with might, fury, alacrity, stability, etc
  • debuffing with slow, weakness, vulnerability, etc
  • if not direct healing, water fields, area regen, life transfer

Certainly we'll still see a meta because some folks like speed clear and other folks prefer to just copy them instead of really learning the content.  But I doubt it will be necessary once we know  the encounters.  People just need to be flexible enough to do some of that helpful stuff.

I think I'll have to get comfortable playing again and then jump into some dungeon groups and see how I like it. I had no fun in them at all the last time I played but they seemed like a complete cluster bunk so that could have something to do with not being any fun. I have several other low level characters I can play to get accustomed back to the mechanics and flow of combat at least.

When I returned, I was essentially in the same position you are now (i.e., lvl 80 main with 100% map clear).  I decided to start a new toon so that I could relearn everything -- the little help notes are actually helpful.  Once I had the basics down, then I returned to playing my main and other toons.

Its also worth noting that the leveling flow(a long while ago) and the entire trait line system(in preparation for the expansion) have been completely redone since you left the game.
