Greetings Everyone,

As many of you know over the past month we've been looking into the benefits / pitfalls of Discord over GameVox. We've noticed a significant drop in players using our Voice Comm over the past year and a lot of that can be attributed towards the bugs and inaccessibility of GameVox. Both have their pro's and both have their con's. What I'd like to hear from you guys is which you prefer and why.

GameVox

GameVox is currently sponsoring us a full featured unlimited server. You can download and join our channel by going to: http://gsch.info/voice

Pro's:

  • Sponsored
  • Cloud Based
  • Secure & Protected IP Addresses
  • Mac & PC Support
  • Event listing integration
  • Persistent Chat Channels
  • Customized Gaiscioch UI
  • Frequently Updated
  • Overwolf Support
  • Allows Sub channels.
  • Easy to use, simple to setup.
  • They've sponsored Us for the past 2 years and have been very responsive to our support issues.

Con's:

  • Requires Download to Listen & Speak
  • Requires Registration to Download
  • Not widely used
  • Unreliable internationally, frequent disconnects.

Discord

A new web/client based voice service sweeping over the livestreaming world for it's ease of use and no download required approach. Join our channel by going to: http://gsch.info/ce

Pro's:

  • Free
  • Cloud Based
  • Secure & Protected IP Addresses
  • Mac, PC, iOS, & Android Support
  • No Download Required for Listening. Instant connect from a URL. Very useful for community events. No configuration required.
  • Frequently Updated
  • Working Overlay
  • Speak mode can be enabled for web platforms however it is voice detection only as web browsers don't allow keypresses to be recorded by web pages while the browser is not the primary focus. This is a security measure built into web browsers to avoid keylogging websites not a limitation by Discords choice.
  • Phenomenal Mobile App

Con's:

  • No Subchannel
  • Users must download & register to use Push-to-Talk
  • Can be confusing at first
  • Feedback Loops more frequent

I plan to bring this up as a core discussion at our monthly meeting on March 12th to get some feedback from you guys. Feel free to toss some more Pro's and Con's for each.

Before anyone asks...

Why Not Teamspeak / Ventrilo / Mumble?

We will not be using these as they are solitary server based which is prone to DDOS and none of them hide your IP from malicious users which means they can target you directly. The security holes in these have been there for years. Our chosen voice communication client will be Cloud Based to prevent the possibility of DDOS attacking us. We are still quite heavily involved in PvP and trolls are common. We need to protect our people and our network as best as possible. In addition, while we can score a license for TS or Vent, that doesn't mean we have a server. We have to have a server to host it. This means one of our members would have to use their own internet access to host it which could result in their home network being compromised and attacked by malicious players. I have seen this happen countless times over the years and it's not pretty. We will NOT be going backwards in technology. The future is where things are going and our options now lay with one of the 2 above clients. I will not compromise the safety of our members.

Discord Cons - was having some scrolling issues. other then that no real cons.

Discord Pros -  Best free comm tool ive ever seen so far,  once they add some tools like friend whispers and some more things ts3 uses i think its game over for the rest of comm tools.

It has great text options ..great for meetings and informational gathering because of the chat and text both with well laid out UI.

GAME VOX - did not like it immediately, issues with mic, and coming from ts3 use felt lacking tools and rings and bells.  Its ok price is great is a plus.

just game vox is passable and Discord is a shinning star in my eyes.

Discord has friend whispers.  (I assume you mean private text messages)

I like Gamevox.

I love Discord too. Since discovering it, my RL friends and I are literally on it 24/7. I think it would really help build GSCH community because of the persisten text chat. Voice when we need it, text all the time.

At first i didn't think much of Discord, but over the months I've grown to really appreciate it for what it offers, and it just seems like the Comms tool of the future presently.  :)

So, funny little story:

I was ... "irritated" at first, when I was told we'd be using it for certain events.  Every time I turn around, someone wants to use a different voice chat and over the past decade, I've come to hate Ventrilo and Teamspeak... in that order.  So I was like... "omg, not another one, what's wrong with Gamevox?"

I clicked the link, groaned when I saw yet another "sign-up", then it opened the channel in my browser and I thought... "what the **** is this?  A browser client, seriously?"  I thought that Fog had gone off his rocker.  Can't even use PTT in the browser, unless it has focus, so pfftt.

Then I saw the link for downloading a "windows app".  I was like... "an app?  what?"

So I downloaded it, but let it sit on my desktop for a couple of days, while I stewed and pouted in Gamevox.

Then I finally decided to see what this thing was, installed it, realized it was a full featured voice and text chat client, but most importantly... it allowed PTT, just like a voice client should!  (hint:  Run Discord in Admin Mode to use PTT and turn off 'Startup with Windows' because it does not launch in admin mode)

Now I'm in love with the silly thing.  Sorry Gamevox, but consumerism is consumerism.  ;)

Moral of the story:  Don't be a hater with trying something new, even if it seems repetitive.  Give it a chance and you might find yourself very much surprised.

I tried both, Gamevox has less problems for me than Discord, sometimes Fog sounds like a scary metal man on Discord when we did the Streaming. Also Gamevox has the option to set up nice and easy your personal server if you want to chat with friends outside of GSCH servers. I'm guessing Discord do as well.

Also I had a bit of hiccups with Discord, I had an account, and forgot the password, and the darn thing didn't let me change it from the website, it logged me automatically >:( So I had to download the program and request a new password from there. Yeah, that's more anecdotal than anything else.

So my vote would be for gamevox, but I won't cry if Discord wins :B

I like both and here is my attempt to list what I see as my primary pros and cons (some will match Fog's).

Gamevox

Easy to use

Notifies well when you get a PM, but the con is it likes to hide them behind the main application window

Pain in the butt to get a new user on for an event at the time of event - usual time is like 10 minutes to get someone up and running on it. Not what you want to be doing during an event.

Can't adjust the tiny chat font so I don't have to put my face to my laptop screen to see it. I'm not sure what anyone else thinks, but I still don't need glasses since my lasik surgery in 1998.

Have to reset the application every time I do something with my headset. I move it to the desktop for work, but on the laptop when using any voice for gaming.

Discord

Really easy to get people in listen mode via a web app - no delay to event, can help them get app after the event if they want.

The whole register, install and setup is as easy as Gamevox - really no difference in learning time.

No subchannels - only con to this is being able to close up a main game channel not to see it's subchannels to save scrolling through everything. Channels are super easy to make and move to where you want them. I figured it out in a couple minutes and still don't know how to make on on Gamevox. LOL

I like how I can have the app run without the headset on so I can at least talk on the walls and in PMs. It does NOT flake out if I turn off the headset or replug it in after using it in another computer. I do not have to restart the app to reconnect the headset to the app.

The text chat is still small, but easier to read with the modern light look you can do.

No clear notification for PMs, BUT you can look at upper left of app and see if you have any. The window is not hiding behind the app like Gamevox. I still miss most of the PMs if NOT looking at the thing on either program.

People can communicate when bored not at home with a phone app if they want.  =)

Only thing I actually hate about Discord is sometimes I go to switch text walls or go in PMs and it wants to open the website instead of just doing it in the app alone.

Conclusion

Both of them work well - but I think Discord could go a longer ways. Maybe we can convince them to allow subchannels in the app. It is free, cloud based, allows quick access for people to listen for events and can't be DDO'd.

Really simple kick, ban and mute menu that comes up when you click on names too. Have to have this because trolls do still exist and I remember the issues we had with Ventrilo.  ::eyeroll::

Also, I don't think either should be ruled out due to connectivity. Both have that issue though one does tend to work better than the other depending on the person's network.

I've never had any troubles with Gamevox. I've had nothing but trouble with Discord. The initial install was awful, had to delete appdata files in two locations and reinstall. I finally got to the point I could use Push to Talk, but that is always messed up. It sticks open, then I change it, then that keybind sticks open.

Anyway, I don't care that much for Discord and would prefer Gamevox.

I'm afraid my feedback is going to be very biased as I could not get Discord to work 100%.  Though I am no code monkey, I'm pretty good around software and finding out how the bells and whistles work.  But for the life of me, no amount of fiddling could get me to be able to talk on Discord; I could hear just fine but no talk.  I have used TeamSpeak, Curse, Mumble, Ventrilo, Raidcall, Razer Comms all without issues, so I do know my way around to setting up voice communications.  I also know that this is probably an issue only to me but there it is.

I WILL say that Discord (the software) is detecting there is a problem and it displayed a banner at the top of its app window with a link to point me to their help pages.  I think that was very cool and thoughtful of them even though the information on the pages did not get my problem solved.

This, at least in a small part, helped me to decide to stop participating in BDO.  I could not take part in the guild's conversations, and the game did not have enough of the fun factor on its own to keep me playing.

I'm for either as both give me issues in their own specific ways (though vox has been working really well since it's last update).

I guess my biggest issues with Discord atm are:
1. Must run in admin or ptt will not work while you are in game - frustrating for new people to figure out, and makes for some awkward situations where people don't realize they are perma-queued even with a ptt button set
2. No subchannels -Feels like I'm scrolling for days and makes things I guess not as nice layout wise

That said I felt it does have some strong points going for it like easy set up, phone app, voice quality is surprisingly good, & I've yet to actually flat out DC form the client

Issues with vox:
1. Tends to drop connection fairly frequently for me, though this has mostly been fixed with their latest update

What I like with vox is the channel browser and ease of channel swapping, customizable skins and integrated calendar, & subchannels.

I don't have any loyalty one way or another to either program so I'll end up going where the family goes regardless of what we decide.

I'd be happy to try out something different, had some sound driver corruption problems that seem to have happened right after a Gamevox update... Installed Discord with no problems, settings seem easy enough, though haven't had the chance to talk or listen yet. The no push to talk without installing could be a problem for trolls, except I noticed in one chat room you couldn't talk without using push to talk, so that would probably fix it.

My system: Intel i7-4790 CPU @3.60GHz, 16GB RAM. Windows 10 Home. Graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960. Have a Razer Naga Laser gaming mouse (model R201-0028) and Logitech Wireless headset.

The initial install was really messed up. So support had me do the following and then reinstall:

Delete the 2 following folders.

- %AppData%/Discord

- %LocalAppData%/Discord

It is working okay, other than the fact that I have to run Discord as admin. But my main problem is that the keybind keeps sticking on open mic for Push to Talk. Frustrating to have to go back and forth trying to get it to work correctly and sometimes the PTT doesn't work at all. I'm running dual monitors and don't know if that is creating any problems.

Hope this helps Fog.

Requiring elevated privileges for game compatibility, is a common issue for a lot of voice programs.  It's nothing unique to Discord.  To be blunt, by now, anyone running Windows should already be used to the "Run as Admin workaround" for many different types of issues, especially if you're a gamer.  That's been a compatibility issue since Vista.

Technically, we shouldn't have to ever run programs with elevated privileges, but we do because of how these programs hook system drivers, and if we want to pseudo-integrate voice and video programs with our games, then we have to force them to play nice.

It's a PITA, but if you want to run these programs with each other, "Run as Admin" is a necessary evil.

I run it on another computer so never have game conflicts.

One other pro I wanted to add is that it is easy to find your PMs and it keeps a running history of the discussion you had with that person just like Facebook does. And I still definitely like how you can go find them without little windows all over for each PM.

Not necessarily true Sekk, I don't have to run Vox/Overwolf/Mumble or TS in admin mode to have them work properly. Discord is the only voice client I've had this issue with.

Also would like to give 2 thumbs up to discord for having the ability to send/save offline messages. Soooooo nice!

Okay first off I have not used Vox and do not intend to. " Must run in admin or ptt will not work while you are in game " I'm so tired of figuring out different voice coms. I enjoy them but if I honestly have to spend a lot of time to set-up and figure out something I will not use it. I enjoy games, not the work which comes with trying to figure out tools or apps I need to play them.

Regardless of what is chosen if it is not user friendly ( even for us older gamers ) you will not see me using it. There comes a time when technology has surpassed the convenience of it's use by the complexity to operate and understand it. Voice chat seems to be headed that direction.

If we're voting, I'll go for Discord. The combination of voice and text is the best I've seen and the ease of use, compared to, say, Ventrilo, is fantastic!

Alana, I use a Naga as well. Mine has two buttons below the wheel, though, and I use the top one of those for PTT. One issue you may be running into is the Razer configuration software taking control and doing something weird. Have you ever messed with that in terms of setting profiles and such?

Soren, that's why I said "sometimes".  Games like to be exclusive, to try and prevent hacking, especially if they use any 3rd party "cheat prevention" software, like Gameguard or XIGNCode3 (BDO uses this).  It's interesting that some people have to manually choose elevated privileges, while others don't.  No one has figured out why, maybe it's how certain anti-virus programs mess with the security configuration, I don't know.  The majority opinion is that Microsoft has just never gotten it right.

"Run as Admin" has been a train wreck ever since it was introduced in Vista.  It works more consistently now, but it's still buggy and inconsistent in some cases, as well as easy to knock out of wack.  That is why it's a Windows problem and not a program problem.  If people don't want to deal with it, they can turn it off, just google "turn off UAC".

I downloaded Discord on my phone and can chat with folks anywhere, anytime.   Two BIG thumbs up.

Both Discord and Gamevox work fine on my computer, but having the option to chat on my phone if I am ever away from my computer or having internet issues puts Discord over the top in my opinion.

I prefer discord as a lot of my other gaming groups have also made the jump to discord, it is easy for me to listen with one and type chat with the others. If I post a link in chat it is nice to see a preview of it in the window. Also it is mobile friendly, so when I am at work I don't have to listen and can still be involved with chat.

@Alana - I use the same mouse and use the top left mouse button. For me it has been the one not used in most of my games.

@Fog - Unless I have another program running as admin (ie black desert) I don't need to run discord as admin as well.
