Why are you playing your main job? What do you love (or think you will love) about it?

Do you need advice or want to have a discussion about potential jobs if you are new to FFXIV?

Post your thoughts here!

This vid should give yousome ideas if you have not played before.

How many characters would be ideal to have?  I've noticed that they seem to separate a lot of gear into Disciple of War and Disciple of Magic, then of course there are the different Classes and eventually the Jobs.

Would it be ideal to have a Disciple of War character, as well as a Disciple of Magic character?

If I understand things correctly, we can have one character get all Classes and all Jobs, but is that realistic and ideal?

I'm getting attached to both my Miqo'te and my Hyur and I don't think I can pick just one, lol.  One is a DoW and the other is a DoM, so I got to wondering if there would be anything wrong with keeping them both?

Good questions, I'll answer them in turn as best I can.

I think as for how many characters it would be ideal to have, I reckon that is up to the individual and how much time they have.  Personally I will have one and level all the jobs I feel like playing on the one toon. However, some people like alts and want a variety race wise, so may want to level more.

Disciple of War vs disciple of magic, again is down to how you like to play.  I like ranged caster dps and healers, so I will level a CNJ which will become a WHM at 30. (I will have to grit my teeth and level a GLD to 15 to allow me to do the WHM quest, which will be funny as I hate melee!) As a WHM is primarily for single target heals, I will also try out scholar eventually as well, so I can switch depending opn whether we need tank heals or raid heals.

As for gear, at low levels my CNJ and WHM can often wear the same gear, but the MND stat is my CNJ's primary whereas the INT is better for my THM.  So as I get higher, the gear will be less interchangeable if you plan to min max.

There is nothing wrong with having both your Hyur and Mi'qote, it just means you cannot out of combat switch to a different job on the fly.  For example, if I am running an 24 person raid and 5 healers show up and we are short on dps, we can switch between us to optimise the group. Or you might just feel like a change and be bored with healing and feel like rawwwring it up with a little dps.

I guess your question illustrates the point that you can do whatever you feel like and there really is no right or wrong way of doing it, it is going to depend on how you like to play and what you love to do at endgame.

Edit : A coupla things to consider:

If they make BOP crafted items, that I have the right crafting job levelled to benefit the right toon eg weaving for a DOM alt (another reason I decided to level them all on one toon). But then I also do not yet know if crafted gear is BOE or BOP.

If you play a THM for example, you can level an CNJ and use a certain number of abilities on your THM.  My THM is 18, which allows me 3 slots to use from my CNJ abilities.  So my THM (mage) can use Cure, Protect and Raise (Rez) as well as her magey type spells.  Which is win. That of course would not be possible if I had levelled them on separate characters. (The higher you level, the more slots become available to you from classes other than your main job you have levelled.)

I am currently planning on leveling a bit as an Archer, then adding in Conjurer so I can do the Bard class quest.  Once a Bard It looks like i'll also want to continue leveling in Archer and Conjurer while also adding in Thaumaturge to get the most cross-job in my abilities as a Bard.   Then it looks like I'll level in Pugilist so that I can then become a Black Mage, and Lancer so I can become a Monk.

The above being said I'm already on my second set of leveling plans, and will likely add a third before long ;)

There is so much synergy between combat jobs, I personally think it makes a lot of sense to level them all on one character.

What about crafting / gathering?  Can someone in the beta comment whether there is any synergy between those and the combat jobs?  If not I may make alts for those.

Common sense says all on one, just like Secret World.  However, in Secret World, you also have 3 factions and it actually feels right to build each a little differently.  Much like FFXIV, in TSW, you switch "class" by switching weapons.  Then you can build unique combos by choosing particular skills from each weapon section.

However, as I said, there are 3 factions so different storylines, lore and some quests, so there are benefits to having more than one toon.  Also, the factions can't be in same guild (called cabal) or PVP with each other, just against each other, so there's that, too.  It also takes a lot of time to level up all weapons and get gear that accents your weapon choices.

I'm seeing pros and cons so far, pretty equal between them.  Class switching on the fly is a concern, but I'm seeing quite a few commenting about just focusing on particular class combinations and jobs so I imagine that choosing a pair of toons with a majority of combos and jobs covered, might be a valid option.

To clarify about "switching on the fly", you can do it out of combat, but not during combat.

This was my first weekend to test out the Beta.  I only played a bit Saturday night and wished it never ended. I only got my Glad to lvl 13 but after getting use to a little slower combat I really enjoyed it and looks like it will be a fun tank again finally.  Where can I find more info on the path to get to Paladin? Does anyone know of any good FanSites yet with good info?

I'll be playing a Marauder/warrior for my main, maybe a monk later on. I really love tanking in this game, they just give you so much information about threat and where it's going right up front and so many great tools to manage threat it's just...*sniff* *sniff* it's just beautiful. Anyway, my thought is for launch I'll lv my marauder up to the point where you're told to do the 3 starter dungeons then lv up a gladiator to 10 and the monk to 8 for their tanking abilities so I have those moving forward. As far as the crafting or gathering classes go it became pretty apparent that they'll take a really significant time investment to get anything really meaningful out of them so I may not do anything with those for awhile. I'd rather beat stuff to death and take their stuff than make my own stuff.

@ Ironbars:Gibsauce is a mine of information about tanking.  I am sure he would talk your ears off in RC about it!

@Monis: as a healer, I love the way threat works in the game...it is something I have to be mindful of, especially when adds spawn on boss fights, but at the same time, when the tank taunts the mobs stick like glue.  Yay for trinity!!!!!!

Sounds like it might be a good thing that I'm leaning more towards DPS jobs (at least I think Monk and Black Mage are DPS), sounds like we'll have tank and heals covered well enough, so just need to kill what we're beating on.

Ah, yea I forgot Arcanist.  I'll try that if they release it for Beta 4.  I spent a lot of time on Thaum this last weekend, but it was mostly to just try and figure out how their mechanic works.  The Ice/Fire state flips are a little intimidating to try to learn without burrowing into a web search.  I'm still not sure I got the gist of it.

my main will be white mage. so i will go with that first. i will start as a gladiator, however, to knock that out, then switch to conjuror in the 10/15 range and take it to whm. i also plan on at least getting a black mage and warrior up to 50. i will probably level arcanist to compliment my healing as a conjuror. i want to do a summoner, but i fear everyone and their mother will be one. =(

I hear ya about the summoner Larela.

I'll be starting with Lancer/Maurader until I can get Dragoon. Once there I'll swap to Arcanist and level unti I can get Summoner. After that who knows! Most likely I'll keep adding classes as needed until I have all of them =p

If you meet yourself on the testing track, don't make eye contact. Lab boys tell me that'll wipe out time. Entirely.

yeah... i have a feeling i will max out every caster, for sure. the warrior is so adorable on a lalafell...i was like "look! i'm a mini dovahkiin!" i like the idea of warrior regardless. there's three crafting classes want too, so many options! i'm still hoping they add something like a time mage or calculator...but i doubt it, since there's so many casters already. there's still an open spot in limsa tho, so i'm hoping they add a thief or gunner type class as well! arrrr pirates! (i'm not excited or anything...noo.... <.< )

I have been reading that some people believe warriors to be a superior tank than a paladin.  It is hard to decipher if this is older information from 1.0 or still relevant now.  Does anyone have an opinion anyway.  I want to play a tank for sure and I love sword and board that was why I originally thought about going paladin but I don't want to be let down.  Also what forums do you guys in the know usually go to for information outside of the beta forums.

Ironbars!! Great to see ya

And I can say having partied with warrior (Marauder) tanks and gladiator (Paladin) tanks that paladins excel at it, warriors are more Direct Damage, but can offtank, but Puglists (monks) can also off tank efficiently as well.

I find the paladin is able to hold aggro more efficiently and is able to mitigate a lot more damage than the warrior without taxing the healers mana pool.

Given your history, I think paladin is going to make you very happy. I'll have Gibsauce chime in as well, as he has a higher level paladin even within beta and seems to be thoroughly enjoying it!
