Compression question

Back in my last days of WoW I made a pretty decent pvp tribute video for my father, but I never compressed the file.

Does anyone know of a freeware or free program that can compress about 200MB into a decent size without impacting quality?

I have decided I very much want to share this video with you guys, but I don't want you all to have to download 200MB if I can help it. 100MB maybe, but not certainly not 200.

Any suggestions?

What format is it in now? What format do you want the final one to be in? Or go straight to DVD? Are you on Windows? Mac? Linux? Maybe try these: Most definitely Handbrake. Works wonders for me on my Mac or Linux machines. Period. http://handbrake.fr/ For Windows try Auto Gordian Knot can do that for you but you may find yourself searching for codecs etc. http://www.autogk.me.uk/ I've heard good things about VirtualDub... but have never tried it myself. http://www.virtualdub.org/ same codec warning applies. I've used FFMpeg before but Handbrake is definitely a more user friendly experience. http://www.ffmpeg.org edit: Just realized that Handbrake is cross-platform. You may have codec issues on Windows but definitely my main recommendation.

It's in mpg format and I'd like it to stay in mpg format (though any format that works with Windows Media Player is fine by me as long as I don't lose quality). Is it Auto Gordian or Auto Gordian Knot? I own a pc and my machine's OS is Microsoft's Vista. Also keep in mind, I have limited experience with making videos and compressing them.

K made a new file with Handbrake. Looks like the sides got cut off a bit. I'm adjusting the cropping to 0 on either side and hopefully that'll help. I forgot to check the new size, but I'll do that once I make sure the video isn't altered.

Fixed it. Didn't realize, but the original file size was a whopping 800 MB. I got the file down to 500MB. I'll try to winzip it to compress it even further.

you should be able to set 'Target Size' and/or 'Bit Rate' to get the file down smaller, but sometimes the quality stinks if you chose a format that is expecting a lower compression rate. AVI is a nice compact format that works well for all of my Downloaded TV shows (AVI and xVid mix...) and that should work in Windows Media Centre according to this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316992 as for sharing the video with people you can get 2 Gig of free... yes FREE online file storage that is accessible from anywhere (Mac/Win/Linux/Mobile/web/etc...) from Dropbox : https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTQxNDY4Mzk I know it is a shameless plug but I lurve my Dropbox!
