Question for RPers

I tend to use the handle Cuth and name all of my characters something that beings with Cuth. I picked up this habit years ago in a guild that encouraged it so we could always easily tell which person was played by which character.

I've seen some complaints on WHA forums when people name all of their characters similarly. Is this against the spirit of RP? Or should I ignore those type of forum posters?

As long as your name is not Cuthyoureyesout or Cuthyourtoungeoff, I don't think there's anything wrong with it. You follow the rules, you pay your sub, you can choose wheter you name your character Cuthbert, Cuthbeth or Cuthgin. If anything, those who complained about it just got nothing better to do in life.

Yeah teh Cuth range of names is a fairly decent range for RP. Now the fact that I still see medium levels running around with Iamthebest or titular names lends a bit of truth to the rumors that since the recent[not really recent but still] Mythic layoffs by EA they are more concerned about keeping the sub and are not worried about the naming policy as it is not being enforced. Then again it could be because there is only one CSR and all the RP griefers have only one place to do it now. Well maybe there is more than one.. but still.

On an additional note to this. I have been seeing more and ore 'non-RP' names floating around out there. Just this past night I reported about 6 names "Whack-a-mole" and similar types. The question is, 'Do other people in this guild ever report people for naming violations?' and if so, perhaps we could start a naming violation thread and attempt to get more people to report these obvious abusers of agreed upon RP policies?

I generally only report people who have names in gross violation... i.e. names that shouldn't fly on any server (not just RP servers) due to their obscene or vulgar content. That said, I tend to socially shy away from people with names that I deem outside the bounds of RP, but aside from cut and dry examples like "Whackamole", it's hard to say what does and does not constitute an RP name... especially since WFRP official content gives their characters names like "Joe Badguy" or "Evil Duke", only in german to disguise their meaning from us poor English-only majority Americans.

Ive been appealed for Fugmug before. I just explained to them his story and what Fugmug actually stands for and reminded them that they awarded me best roleplay story in 06 for his blog. They let me keep him, but that doesnt stop players from giving me grief about the name. If you want to be Cuthbeth, Cuthgin etc go for it, I cant imagine anyone getting butthurt over that.

Someone report Shanked for his name because it offended them - he was a level 40 slayer and a dard good one - I ran with him several times and think it was probabaly a destro player ticked off at him because Shanked slaugtered them. I report names like Ikillu and similar. I don't care if I see an elf named Bob or Jim - and I have actually seen two names out there that are from engineering firms that I use to deal with when I worked for the government. Kuboda and Wildan....now is it just a coincidence - not sure and I haven't asked them....not going to either - It's a game and I don't want to talk business if it is them. I've seen WH's name Jessejames and similar- doesn't bother me either.....names area strange thing and as long as the player doesn't try to be l33t - I don't care. Also reported a player with the name Idontrp .... so did about 5 other people that night :) I have always used the same types of names...casters are Morigana, Kalypso (was taken) or similar....toons that are assassin like are named Korsica or Rayvyn if we had barbarians she would be named Jarnsaxa, Boudicea (taken) or Penthesilea ..... I try to stick to names that mean something to me....last names usually have Blood or Wyrm in them...or both....although if the setting is more modern or futuristic - or there aren't any Wyrms or dragons in the world...I go with Pyre, Cane, or Fairhand.

Bah, the naming violations responsibilities has been given to EA... the only ones that are going to get changed are ones that are offensive (I assume Twomadre Esgorda has had to change his name by now..). You'll see the non-offensive, non-RP names just increase.

Yeah I appeal. But heck I have a CSR request about receiving mail with the items greyed out sitting there for 2 weeks. I dont expect name changes to happen.

I have actually changed a couple of names on my own for the sake of the RP server... for instance, Krimhild was originally Trinitrotoluen (not enough room for the last "e") which was also the name of my bomb-specced animist on Galahad. But in the interest of saving people from their tiny brain anurisms, I went with Krimhild instead. Heck, I'm sure to someone, Eirynn isn't even a good RP name. After all, there are no Irish in the Old World...
