"Soft" stat caps revision in our Guides/in-game

This is just a post to help some ppl, such as myself, that play their chars and games on a level to try and know the most and to be the best of what they can be for themselves and their "team"/alliance/guild/warband.

Vamps guide on stat lvls and priorites in the How-to section is excellent, except I just wanted to help by editing it with this piece from the Mythic Herald...

"Q. I was wondering if you could explain more about the topic of diminishing returns on stats. From the most recent patch notes (at the time was 1.2), we were made aware of diminishing returns starting to take effect after a certain number, but we aren't told what number exactly. Perhaps some more light needs to be shed so that the very best players can specialize accordingly!

A. The stat cap scales, based on the player’s level. The higher the player’s level, the higher the stat cap. This is to ensure that players are always staying within reasonable ranges for stats based on their current level. The cap for players at level 40 is currently 1,050. "

Vamp had the soft cap at "around 800" in his post/guide, and Ive been having tons of discussion with everyone in game (alliance, guild and others alike) without getting a definitive answer on the actual softcap (which really matters when stacking on stat priorities for end-game players and content). So, I spent the last few days corroborating the number above with forums and posts all over, most of which had it set previous to this actual mythic herald post at 1200.

1050 is indeed the softcap for your stat priority target, meaning that, after attaining 1050 in your primary stat priority (i.e. My stat priority as a full salv WP is willpower, followed by Toughness, Wounds, Initiative, then strength - so my primary is willpower) you will only gain HALF (1/2) pt value for each stat gain for stat point after that. This doesnt mean that you shouldnt or cant go WAY over that cap, it just means that when you reach it youre GENERALLY better off leveling out your stat priorities because your gain in those below 1050 is much better and more beneficial to your char as a whole. An example would be a BW that just stacks on INT entirely. Said BW would do extra dps, however, he would gave noticably more survivability in toughness/wounds if he were to instead use those "extra" pts there. Survivability, in many circumstances equals much more DPS (in all games Ive ever played), because a very old gamers adage holds true (and healers like to use it a lot ;)...

"You can't DPS if youre dead." lol... ok back on point.

IF at some point you somehow (doubtful until lvl 80 full epics and warlord gear) level out your top THREE stat priorities to 1050, by all means crank your primary stat up OR put extra pts into your resistances. Resistances softcap at 40%, and any pts that convert any resistance to higher than 40% only grant 1/2 the % value from there out (again, a 43% resistance is still better for you than 40%, but you could instead give yourself X more toughness say to mitigate more dmg in general than that 3% would do in the first place...)

So, there it is. The softcap for stats is 1050, and the softcap for resistances is 40%. All that extra stuff in between is me being me and overexplaining and talking too much - which is why you all love me, right? Right. 8@DX <---clown with a bowtie emote.

Good to know it's 1050. 1050 is still very hard to get to even with liniments without severely hurting yourself in other stats. But it is still something to keep in mind. I'm not sure if in my guide that I mentioned to level your main stat to the cap and then start adding in melee attack power, magic power, ballistic skill, etc since those latter stats only affect damage. For example, strength improves damage AND lowers your chance to be parried. Melee power ONLY increases melee damage.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but liniments don't count towards your cap. Same as DAoC. You can reach your cap with whatever type of gear you want, and once your there, buffs and abilities that take the stat beyond your cap just stack on top of that. They do not count as diminishing returns.

Oh, well that IS good to know. I dont remember seeing anything about the diminishing returns discussion on linaments/pots, etc, but you guys have more experience with it than me. I think that may be why some things in notes and the strat guide are listed as "non-stacking" or "base stacking" or "last stacking" maybe?

Really liniments don't count towards the soft cap? Oh boy, that's interesting.

I'm not saying they don't, but I wouldn't think they do. I would assume it works the same as DAoC and other games with stat caps, which is that you get to your stat cap through various gear and modifications to that gear (spellcrafting, talismans, etc.). And at that point, any pots you drink or buffs you get (from spells or abilities) should stack on top of that. Otherwise, I don't see the point in having such abilities.

Regolyth did you ever find out if liniments took us over the cap? One thing I found for myself is that a str liniment and a str self WP buff won't stack.

Yeah, I did. Apparently anything that takes you over the cap (1050) suffers diminishing returns (buffs, potions, liniments, etc.). Also, diminishing returns is 1/3, not 1/2 like I thought earlier.
