In Loving Memory of Scott "Paleus" Kingston (1967-2016)

It is with a sad heart that I share with you the passing of the person we knew in game as Paleus. Paleus, Scott in real life, has been with Gaiscioch since the days of Rift. He passed away this last Friday from complications of some surgeries he had to have that came upon him fairly suddenly.

Scott's family, his 10 year old son Matthew and his wife Donna are having to find a way to live life without him. He was a devoted husband and father and never logged on to the game fully until Matthew was tucked in for the night so many did not get the chance to play along side him. Scott had a busy work and family life but he was still an example to me on how you can still take care of real life and still have fun with good friends once the important parts were taken care of.

I have not known him that long but for the time we have known him in ESO, over a year now, he was a bright star in our lives. Many people outside of this type of online community don't know what kind of real life friendships that can be forged in this environment and this community.

We spoke of real life sparingly but kept each other appraised of the important real life things, but mostly we shared the joy of working together as a team. Overcoming obstacles on a regular basis, sharing our limited game time and our brief respite from the pressures of real life on an almost daily basis. We found a home and a family in this virtual environment that transcended this simple game. True friends are precious.

Paleus was a funny, caring, stubborn, bull-headed, indecisive, competitive, positive, happy human being. We typically had to hang out in the 18 plus channel for those raids and groups when the humor got a bit more NSFW. When we struggled, when we learned new content, when we banged our head against the same thing over and over, when we stayed up way too late and regretted it the next day, and when we were finally successful.

I know that Paleus would not want us to be sad and hang our heads, as hard as it is not to do so. At this point the game and life seems diminished without him. I know he would want us to continue to have fun, to continue to live life and remember him fondly. He has leveled up from this life and he firmly believed that he will be going to a better place and a different home than we all know now.

Paleus has leveled up from this life.

We will miss you Scott. You will always be Emperor Paleus to us. Black Boot!

There will be an in game memorial for Paleus at the South Cyrodiil wayshrine area this Friday at 8pm server. Likely Haderus, we can adjust at the time as needed. Please come and share your thoughts or stories with us as we bid farewell to a friend.

It is always sad when one of our own moves on to the next stage of existence.  I did not have the pleasure or the opportunity to meet Paleus, but from what you have said he has been loved in this family by many!

My deepest condolences to his wife Donna and his son Matthew.  I wish for hope and comfort for the future as they continue on with Scott watching over them.

His memory will be carried on by all who knew him and loved him, within this family and his own!

Rest in Peace Scott.

I'm so sorry.

I was saddened to hear this news.  I did not have the pleasure of playing with Paleus due to our different schedules, but I heard of the good times had by all.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Donna, and his son Matthew.  This is a difficult time and there are no words to help ease their pain but I ask God to give them the comfort they need and strength to move forward over these next few days and into the future.

This was very sad to hear about.  Scott, our Emperor Paleus, was a good man.  He was always jovial, and he did a lot for the people who played with him in the later timeframes.  I did not get to spend nearly as much time with him in ESO as I would have liked.

Here's to his memory, and his family.  May he rest is peace!  May his family find some solace, no matter how minor, in the others who cared for him.  My wishes for all the best to them, as they try to deal with this loss.

I still can't fathom that he will never be online, talk to me about new strats & laugh on TeamSpeak/Discord.

I'm embarrassed yet proud to admit to have cried for him. He was more than a great player, he was a great person one could ever dare ask for. I'm so sad that we never had the opportunity to really, you know, say goodbye and all that. I'm so sad for his family, his friends. Pale just told me he was going away for a while before he logged off for the last time. I assumed it was just his busy work schedule as usual but then-

Those who will never meet him would've loved him, admired him as I had. He has truly gone too early.

Whether it's this world, the next or in the void we meet, I will always call him friend.

The first time I met Pale was when we weren't even actually talking to one another. It was during an almost 2-month period of when the Aldmeri Dominion in Cyrodiil (Haderus) had pretty much every resource/keep. He and I first fought together as Ebonheart Pact at Kingscrest Lumbermill.

That fight against the resource guards and 4 other AD was the beginning of an unfortunately brief friendship.

After that we started to get to know one another more. He was calm and focused. Definitely determined and rebellious whenever it came to the AD Emp, going so far as creating a character called "OMFG Pony'd".

He was humorous and quiet when appropriate, a great listener and made great assessments of situations. Though he may not have spoken much during PvP raids with Bobo & JD, I learned much from him.

After that, we started just beating the shit out of everyone in the Arboretum of Imperial City. I would alwys see Pale, Terra, Cat, Ash and JJ in a different channel on our TeamSpeak. He'd come by every now and then for a bit of a chat. Then Pale was kind enough to invite me to Trials.

At first I said no, then the second time he asked he was going over very brief new strats he wanted to try out with me as a tank or DPS. I again said no as I was busy trying to conquer other content and after that, I started doing a bit more content with him. I just couldn't refuse the man! I believe our last run together was in a ~29 minute Maw of Lorkhaj run (normal) and that he was planning to do Vet Maw of Lorkhaj with the same group. He was also giving me some tips particularly about patience regarding Sempiternal's core trial group.

Everyone in that endgame GSCH Trial group BLACK BOOT will probably tell you the same thing I'm saying: Pale was not just a great player. He was a great person & leader. I will forever say this until I myself pass on.

Before he logged off for the last time slightly over 16 days ago, Pale told me he was going away for a bit. And he had a busy work schedule concerning tech or whatever it was, so I assumed he went to work or something or another business trip like the month before.

Then JJ told me that Pale was in the hospital and at first I was worried. I told JJ to tell Pale that if he needed anything, anything at all, to let me know. I assumed he'd be fine, it'd be a happy ending. Later on, I learned from Ash, JJ and Terra (I even spoke softly to Terra in TeamSpeak in disbelief during a run, asking him if he knew about Pale, to my sadness, he said yes) that Pale was..gone.

When I read the messages, my first thoughts were, "Shit, even JJ can't be this tasteless of a joker" and as he continued explaining things I went into deeper shock, I just knew and I just knew I had to accept it. Gone. Pale was gone. And I have never heard JJ & the others sound so tired before and that made me a little afraid as well.

At first I felt sadly annoyed and also incredibly regretful/sad. Annoyed with Pale for not telling me or some of the others. Regretful I never got to say anything else. My last words to him were "See you when you get back!"

After I learned he was in the hospital, I sent him a mail wishing him good health and welcoming him back to the game should he receive the mail in-time.

Now I know Pale will never read my mail, never get to talk to me or his family or friends ever again. The cheeky guy got the last word in as always and I'm incredibly sad in a twisted humorously disbelieving way if that makes any sense.

In a way, even if I can't go to his grave physically right now, I know I need to go to the in-game memorial even if, even if it means admitting that's it's all true.
