there was a discussion in the Nar Shaddaa chat that made me wonder if anyone knew what the impact will be long term on games related to starwars.

i cant tell if its just fear-mongering on the community's part, or if there might be some truth to some of the things that they were saying.  some of those being:

we are no longer playing starwars.... its just a game that looks like starwars. ie: bioware/ea might not be able to say this cannon. thus none of this story never happened in the movie story line.

other then the stories that disney now has ownership this would also be true. thus book stories and such are effected.

and other things along that line.

thoughts?

What you heard is correct. Disney made a statement before The Force Awakens was released saying that the expanded universe was not being treated as canon for the new trilogy of movies. Here is an article I quickly googled explaining it.

ok heres how this all works. first and foremost Disney did this to avoid having to pay authors for concepts or characters they plan on using in the movies, by making those stories non cannon if a character they liked was in a book they can use that concept rename the  character and not have to pay someone else a dime for something made with the universe they own. yeah its scummy but it is legal and this way they don't have to use the bad parts.

next as far as swtor is concerned yeah were now legacy but there have been rumors of a revan movie which means that kotor may in fact be cannon. more importantly since EA got the exclusive star wars video game rights the chances of their games being made cannon is rather high. also good to note is they have no plans on going into the past more then revans story from most reports which means all those books from the revan era or older could and most likely will be made cannon again.

hope this helps:)

Apparently the next episode of Rebels will feature the Malachor system, so we may start to see the shape of things soon-ish.
