"Now the general who wins a battle makes many calculations in his temple ere the battle is fought. The general who loses a battle makes but few calculations beforehand. Thus do many calculations lead to victory, and few calculations to defeat: how much more no calculation at all! It is by attention to this point that I can foresee who is likely to win or lose." -Sun Tzu

I’d like to start a Warrior Tanking thread. Here in this thread I will post my Main Tanking build along with the macro’s I use and how I use them. I would also like to use this thread for others to post their builds, ask questions and we learn off each other. As I often state, I am a looooooooooooooong way from being the best Tank out there, but, I also don’t consider myself being the worst. I’m simply a person who has tanked basically their entire online gaming life which is about 12 years now dating back to Asheron’s Call, World of Warcraft and now RIFT.

So, with that said, let’s get started. – What I would like to see come from this thread is some of the more experienced Tanks list their builds. Also, if someone could add maybe a Gear Progression Chart for New Level 50 Warriors, What to get, Where to get it type thing.

Ok, First my Build – My Tanking build is a 20 Warlord / 38 Reaver / 8 Paladin (I'll Edit this later and put the Hyperlink there to my build) – A Reaver build has insane threat but also great Mitigation – It’s easy to tell if you’re doing something wrong with a Reaver build. If you lose threat, you’re doing something wrong.

As you begin reaching Caps you can adjust the points in Paladin for Increasing Armor and put those points into Aggressive Guardian (This will increase your threat by 20% for your Retaliation Ability based on Endurance)

By taking Warlord to 20, I’m able to pick up Promise of Steel and Cutting Distraction which is an unique raid debuff. The presence of cutting distraction is a big boost to raid DPS.

Taking Paladin to 8 gives me Touch of Life which has saved me more times than I care to remember and most importantly gives me Shield of Hero.

Finally, 38 Reaver – I can’t say enough good things about this Soul. It is the best Mitigation Soul IMO

Overall info on this build: (I found this information on the RIFT Forums)
19.8% Physical damage reduction and 25.08% non-Physical from Gifts
10% Block from the Pally's Aggressive Block
5% Block from the Pally's Stalward Shield
5% Block from the Pally's Shield of the Hero
4% Block from the Warlord's Defensive Experience
7.69% non-physical reduction from the Warlord's Intimidating
11% reduction to everything from the Warlord's Call to Entrech
3% Dodge from the Warlord's Battlefield Awareness proc
5% Dodge from the Warlord's Enhanced Dodge
7% reduction to everything from the Reaver's Power from the Masses
3% non-physical reduction from the Reaver's Crest Mastery
3% reduction to everything from the Reaver's Imbued Armor
9% reduction to everything from the Reaver's Binding of Death
15% reduction to everything for 8 seconds every 1 minute from the Reaver's Infestation
If you dip below 30% health you'll take 20% less damage from the Reaver's Power in the Blood
TOTAL:
30% damage reduction from everything (peaking at 45% damage reduction from everything for 8 seconds every 1 minute with the Reaver's Infestation)
20.74% physical reduction of the remaining 70% damage not mitigated by overall reduction (a 5000 hit attack would be 3500 dmg after overall reduction, which in turn would be hitting you for 2774 damage before being further mitigated by your armor) [with Infestation, the same 5000 hit would end up hitting you for 2180 damage before being further mitigated by your armor]
35.77% non-physical reduction of the remaining 70% damage not mitigated by overall reduction (a 5000 hit attack would be 3500 dmg after overall reduction, which in turn would be hitting you for 2248 damage) [with Infestation, the same 5000 hit would end up hitting you for 1766 damage]
24% Block
8% Dodge

Before I get into Macro’s, I want to mention one important line that should be added in every macro you make that is intended for get in your face and smack things around.

cast Retaliation - Follow a successful block with a devastating blow dealing 120% of weapon plus 320 to 325 Physical damage. Generates additional threat. This ability is not affected by the global cooldown.

Here are a couple of Key points about this Ability – It Generates additional Threat, It’s not affected by the Global Cooldown and it’s an Activated ability following a Successful Block.

With that said, I always put cast Retaliation at the top of all of my macros that I’m going to be using to cause physical damage. Even my AoE Macro’s I’ll put this ability at the top, because when you’re smacking on 20 mobs, you’ll always have at least one of them selected and if Retaliation comes up, I want it used.

Now, to go over some of the types of Macros.

First we have the “Builder” Macro – This is basically a Macro that you will place a number of abilities that generate points. Based off my build, I have found that the following “Builder” Macro produces the most threat, dps to a Single Target.

Single Target Builder:
#show Aggressive Block
suppressmacrofailures
cast Retaliation
cast Aggressive Block
cast Pacifying Strike

AoE Target Builder:

#show Cyclone Strike
suppressmacrofailures
cast Promise of Steel
cast Cyclone Strike
cast Blood Fever
cast Retaliation

Finisher:

cast Retaliation
cast Call to Entrench - The Warrior's battle cry reduces the damage raid members take by 5%, in addition to reducing the damage that the Warlord takes by 3%:
1 Point: 6 seconds.
2 Points: 12 seconds.
3 Points: 18 seconds.

cast Spotter's Order - Points out the weak points on the target, causing each attacker to deal additional Physical damage on 1 attack every 3 seconds for 20 seconds:
1 Point: 209 damage.
2 Points: 369 damage.
3 Points: 530 damage.

AoE Taunt

#show Incite
cast Incite
cast Concussion

Next we have a DoT Macro: (Also use this for your Ranged Pulls) - This is basically a macro that’s going to place Damage over Time ability on the mob/mobs

#show Soul Sickness
cast Soul Sickness - Tear at an enemy's spirit for 713 Death damage over 15 seconds. This ability grants 1 Attack Point.
cast Infestation - Enemy is gored, creating a festering wound on their body. The wound putrefies for 8 seconds before rupturing, dealing 611 Death damage for each Reaver damage over time ability that the target is afflicted by. Generates additional threat.
cast Necrotic Wounds - This ability Infects an enemy with the energies of death and entropy causing 656 Death damage over 15 seconds. Generates additional threat. This ability grants 1 Attack Point.

Well, there you have it, the one thing I’ve noticed about this Family is everyone is Very helpful and I just want to do my part. If there’s anything I can do to help anyone of you, please don’t hesitate to ask.

See ya in Game
Mump

I have several tank builds based on what I am doing and where. For raids mt/ot - full VK, 7Wl, 8 Pal - Which I need to adjust now that the Call is not an AOE threat builder 44(or 38) pally /WL/VK for solo AOE farming/onslaughts etc Damage to target on block with heals on blocks etc - pretty much pull everything in sight and let em beath themselves to death on my shield Plant tank spec for OT in GSb which is a mix of reaver/wl/vk Dps role is just Val's build I cant say enough about full 51 VK though with the pally Touch of life you have 2 oh crap buttons to heal you, magical mitigation/dmg sheld, str and block ramps up with pacts (increases block etc) spellbreaker/spell sunder, shields and plenty of AOE threat generation. If you have the blighted war set and a VK crystal you get a perma buff to parry of 3% Look at the stat sheet and no, the armor/block/health arent as high as a Pally build, but in my experience (in a group, with heals etc) VK trumps a pally build. For solo survival (and almost non stop aoe pulling) Ill swap to Pally Since I am at work I cannot drop numbers and % on everything - this is just how i perceive my builds - and how i use em.
