Mijjah: <3 Sup love! <3
Elth: Check your mail!
MikeyDee: Yeah, Ed's awesome. He's been dropping some great insight for both Rift, & sweater PVP, over at Gamebreaker.tv's podcasts for some time now. Would be fun to RvR with/against him in GW2!
Astraiel: As for sweater, it's "ok" at best, to me. I did have a lot of fun playing it with Mij last weekend, but when she wasn't online, the game showed its true colors to me, fast (egregiously over-hyped). To be fair though, I'm not a big Star Wars fan. A lot of the enjoyment fans of the series would see in this game, I likely wouldn't share. If I was a die-hard SW fan, I'd likely have a great time based on just the fan service provided. Regardless, while I appreciate the VO in this game so far (for the most part it's great, though some of it is still awful here and there), the rest of the game seems tacked on, and rushed in comparison:
Visuals: The visuals leave much to be desired. The stylized look is fine, but the extremely poor texture work, lack of robust, post-processing effects, and general lack of attention to detail in many parts of the game world, is just unsatisfactory. Especially for a game coming out in 2011, with the Star Wars license of all things, and with the big name studios and affiliates that it has backing it ($$$). These visuals fall immensely short of the hype the devs tried to build, in their official random podcasts, interviews, and articles. Especially when compared to their competitors, and even SWtoR's own CGI. And the shortcuts in using low quality impostors everywhere, coupled with recycling so many game cells/buildings, with little variance/objects to mask the copy-pasta, really lessens my enjoyment of the environments I'm exploring (WTB more effort!).
Audio: The audio also suffers from a noticeable lack of effort in certain spots. The world sounds very dull and boring when exploring at times, with a glaring lack of ambient sounds, and even music in many areas (beta bug?). And while the actual music and voice acting have been recorded well enough, even they could benefit from some improved mastering during cut-scenes (the volume sliders can mask this problem a bit though, at the user level). The same can be said for companions actually, as they're unnecessarily loud, regardless of how far they are from you (not to mention the "hear-everyone's-companion-on-the-server-bug").
Combat: Targeting is terrible in this game atm, which really makes combat a chore at times (no target of target either, ouch). The AI reminds me of private server mobs without scripting (essentially, everything is tank & spank). There are numerous ability bugs as well, like getting stuck in the environment, falling through the world, abilities (like target buffs) randomly not working, etc. Considering how long the hype-train has been going for this game, I expected more combat (and overall) polish, this close to release. Talent trees seem a bit stale atm, but those always get reworked/rebalanced. Plus there could be further class customization beyond talents, that weren't made apparent to me during the beta weekend.
UI: Needs tons of work, but I'm sure that'll come in patches.
Customization: Minimal at present, but it's probably to "protect" the SW franchise/canon or something. Working as intended?
Storyline: Aside from VO for almost every game actor, other MMOs long before this one have already proven that you can have epic, enthralling storylines, where your character can make choices (with repercussions), and cut-scenes that revolve around your characters decisions (even going as far as to having your character engaging in said cut-scenes). Since I've played a few of those other MMOs that do this already, the hype around this bullet point fell flat on its face for me.
Server stability: Not bad actually. A few hiccups here and there, but overall pretty good.
And since I don't care much for SW lore, I have to fall back on those core gameplay mechanics and presentation, to find my enjoyment. And I honestly found the game to be run-of-the-mill/mediocre in its present iteration (especially when compared to its competitors, both old and new, whether at launch, or established). It just feels like "another decent MMO." That's not to suggest that the game is terrible, by any means, but it doesn't even begin to live up to the hype for me. I think the hosts of "The Republic" podcast put it best when they said,"...essentially, it is WoW in space. But that's not necessarily a bad thing." But I knew that going into the beta, from watching tons of podcasts, reading previews, watching twitch streams, etc. So I wasn't overly disappointed. It actually turned out a bit better than I expected, so grats Bioware (I expected a steaming pile)?
It really is just a game to spend time with Mij in for me at this point, while we wait for updates for other games we play, or for new (and better) MMOs to release, or for just better coop/mp games in general (Looking at you, Torchlight 2 & D3!). Playing with loved ones and friends can make almost any game fun though. So while I agree with a lot of what you said Astraiel, and for all the faults I witnessed myself in playing the beta, I'll still have fun playing it with Mij & friends, but I couldn't, in good conscience, recommend this game to anyone, unless they're huge SW fans (in which case, they would likely be playing it already). Save your money, or at least try before you buy!
All that being said, I'd love to explore the Mass Effect universe in an MMO (so long as it doesn't have all the "bleh" sweater has). Funny how that works, huh? :P
Back to pics! The npc clone wars begin:
