I'm a little leery of Funcom games after AoC, but it does look interesting, from what I've seen.
lol no more demo today. the timer is up, and they've only sent ten beta invites.
I've been following TSW (The Secret World) for about 3 years now. It's kinda like DAoC set in the modern world. Three factions, you PvP in the underworld (think frontiers), no PvP on the surface where you track and kill monsters. It also browws a feature from UO, NO LEVELS! You increase your skills with guns by USING guns, etc. I expect it to have MANY issues and to be delayed a few more times. Funcom, IMO, isn't very good with meeting schedules.
FYI.
The delay was due to a second party programming function - which could be blamed on FC for hiring the wrong party to do it - but I don't. They were creating a game on Facebook to hype TSW where you recruit friends to join the community and then use them like pawns for this game to take contol of portions of the world for your faction. People who were leaders of the game when it came to a close were guarranteed beta spots (at some phase of testing) and all who did the link to FB from their main page were registered at achance to particpate in Beta.
There has been an outcry (although shown as a vocal minority) on their forums that are against FB or using it. However this was a business decision based on the economics of advertising and how many people FB could reach vs. any other media for the price of doing this FB game.
The game which is called "The Secret War" is still not live although the sign-up and link work which does sign you up as being interested to particpate in Beta. And even though some people don't like FB from a business/marketing stragey it can't be faulted.
The game, The Secret World" (which isn't tied progamming wise to The Secret War FB game) has already been in Beta for several months when they hired a group of professional testers and have recently let in some community members, family, and friends. The failure to launch on 8/26 had nothing to do with the actual game but the failure of the 2nd party to get their FB game to work.
They have announced April 2012 for release - and I fully expect them to meet that; given that will make almot a full year of Beta testing.
I have been following the game for over 4 years now. Over there, I am known as Rayvyn Madigan (which is also my FB name).

Well after following this game for several years and fully expecting to play it, looks like I will have to pass on this one. Apparently it will be micro-transaction + sub from the start. They say it won't unbalance the game but it destroyed LoTRO for me, the devs there said the same thing and then little by little tore apart the game and piecemealed it in the store, including removing functionality (concerning end-game weapons) and putting it into the store instead. Already in AoC, which is a Funcom game, you can buy dungeon gear in the store. So, no thanks. I am hugely disappointed. *sigh*
Just to make it clear - this is their quote on the "in-game" store.
"We will be revealing more information about the store at a later date, but what we can say for now is that it will focus mostly on convenience item and character customization items such as clothing - of which The Secret World will offer a ton of variety! As developers we are being very careful in making sure that items purchased through the store does not give players any unfair advantage against those who do not use the in-game store.
Character power in The Secret World will be determined by how well you play the game, not how much money you are willing to put into it. Funcom already has considerable experience with in-game stores such as these and we have previously implemented these systems without damaging game balance in our other games, and as such we are confident the same will be true for The Secret World."
There is still some trepidation on the part of the community "in-general" of what it will really entail.
As far as me - I don't really care if casual gamers can purchase stuff - it won't change my gaming experience. I am vastly more interested in exploring and storyline. I would much rather have someone pay the gaming company real dollars for experience potions or gear than to pay a powerleveler or gold farmer - and it will be the same type of person that does both. Although an in-game store makes it seem more legit and therefore probably get used by some others.
