A Story I used for a School Paper related to Rift

The assignment was to 'Describe Love and Death'. This is what I submitted and it went over quite well...


Love and Death

As the Guardian Cleric, Corvinadea the Daredevil, lay dying at the feet of the Goliath Golem she had failed to defeat, her companion, Fea, hovered at a safe distance, gently fluttering her wings. Fea had been Corvinadea’s companion for a very long time, and they had encountered many creatures not nearly as strong as this golem. Yet, on this day, she watched her dear friend lie there in defeat. Her heart finally poured out the emotion she felt, and the tears she had been keeping at bay streamed from her eyes.

“Why are you crying, Fairy?” asked a voice that she noticed was actually below her. She looked down to see a rabbit staring directly up at her.

“Who are you?” she asked.

“I am Hoppy, the Harbinger of Death. I have come to herald the arrival of Death. He comes in only a few moments for the cleric lying over there.

Fea wept with renewed passion. “You cannot take her. I love her. She is my friend and companion. I would do anything for her.”

“There is not much that I can do to help you, Fairy,” Hoppy stated in a rather matter of fact manner. “Unless…”

Fea cleared the tears from her eyes quickly. “Unless what?” she asked.

“Well, the state of death is pretty final, but your friend over there is not quite dead. I cannot change my master’s plans once she ceases to have the body functions indicative of one who is ‘alive’, but if your love for her is true, there is but one way.”

“Yes? What is it? I’ll do anything!” Fea exclaimed.

“Love, being the strong emotion that it is, and the Fairy, being the magical creatures that you are, can combine to have quite an interesting effect. Your emotion pours forth now from your eyes…”

“Because I love her so much and it pains me to think that I will lose her forever.”

“Then let those tears be the manifestation of your love. Your tears will heal her, Fairy… quite literally."

The ground began to change colors around them suddenly, and the air grew thick and dim. It was as if the light of the day was being snuffed out, yet only in the immediate area where they were now gathered.

“My master approaches,” Hoppy said.

Fea quickly flew over to Corvinadea. The body laid there, the breath so shallow that only someone who was looking closely would know she was still alive. With Death himself approaching behind her, and Hoppy squatting just above Corvinadea’s head now, a tear gently crested Fea’s cheek and fell to the chest of her dear friend.

A fluorescent green glow began to erupt from the ground around them. There was a distinct line that could be seen where this glow met the effect that preceded the full arrival of Death. The woman rose to her feet as if from a deep sleep and greeted her dearest companion with an embrace that could not be described with words, as love cannot.

Hoppy smiled, for what kind of smile a rabbit can make, and hopped off to herald his master elsewhere. He felt good knowing that Love had triumphed Death this day, but he of all creatures would know, that Death always wins in the end. At least his master would not be too upset.

Thanks. I threw it together. Was only supposed to be a page. Ended up longer in the 14pt font 1 1/2 space format the instructor wanted. I thought it was cute at least.

Love it and now I know that I chose right when I got a rabbit as my sidekick. My own little harbringer of death :)
