Riftdrawl- The feeling millions of people get when not being able to play the game rift.

Random says: Chad lets go!, rift is not gonna be up for two more days.
Chad Says: NO!! What if they put the servers up early?!
Random Says: Your going through riftdrawls man! snap out of it!

Don't want to hear from you alpha and omegas, be empathic, I'm SUFFERING here, this is a SERIOUS condition! ;)

I quit Rift three days before Gaiscioch returned there. Must have fumbled my luck roll.

I felt the effects of Riftdrawl after Beta 2. So, I tried to do everything to play every game I have just to occupy myself. Now I'm happy because I got into Alpha.

I'm right there with ya, as is my roommate! Hey Fog, can we get one of those nifty hour countdown number things on the site? :P And this is why spelling is important: with·draw·al    /wɪðˈdrɔəl, -ˈdrɔl, wɪθ-/ Show Spelled[with-draw-uhl, -drawl, with-] Show IPA –noun 1. Also, with·draw·ment. the act or condition of withdrawing. 2. Pharmacology . the act or process of ceasing to use an addictive drug. drawl    /drɔl/ Show Spelled[drawl] Show IPA –verb (used with object), verb (used without object) 1. to say or speak in a slow manner, usually prolonging the vowels.

Huh, so they screwed up when they coined the term for urban dictionary? lol A big thanks for pointing this out, these are things I'm very unlikely to catch, like loosing battles, poultry sums, being exited about something, ... Spell-check says they are all right, why is everyone laughing? :D

The way I look at it is that unless I can speak your native language as well as you can speak mine, then I probably shouldn't be laughing at anyone. lol. ;0

I hope I didn't offend anyone, now that I think about it, though I never did understand why some people get upset when their spelling or grammar is corrected. I understand that English is not everyone's native language and I merely hope to instruct! And I agree that sometimes the mistakes are pretty funny, but I'll only laugh if the person who made the mistake does. :)

*hugs* Deft These are hard times, as long as we stand together we will prevail! @Bentmer Let's laugh together at the people who managed to get the term Riftdrawl on UD in the first place! (Yeah, I'm passing on the responsibility for this one!) :D @Arieltalia No worries, thanks for pointing it out, honestly! Yes, it's always a bit embarrassing when someone tells you your fly is open, but I prefer this to running around with an open fly all my life. ;) (I'm about to write several articles about why some people might be upset, I better stop myself right here.) ;)

Is Riftdrawal accompanied by a twitchy right index finger, the urge to move the fingers of the left hand in a WASD like pattern, while gazing the horizon for an orange colored haze? If so then I think I have it!

I'll never understand those who can only imagine ONE way to spell a word! I can usually come up with SEVERAL ways to spell any word and they all look OK to me. English is such a mixture of Celtic, Latin, Anglish, Saxon, Danish and Norman French that the rules get VERY confusing! And who came up with the idotic grammer? Good, Better, Best! Give me a break! In Swedish is Good, Gooder, & Goodest! Mac, spelling challenged in many languages.

You should have seen the outcry when there were some minor changes to the German language and grammar that made everything more logical and adapted writing to pronunciation. I loved it even though I had to learn a few new things. (I wonder if the Swedish changed their language to a further extend, it would fit their mentality.) Yes, some pronunciation/spelling in English is really odd, like the silent w in sword and the more languages you know the more possible spelling of the same word you have to remember. Ketchup, Catsup, Catchup or Ketschup?

I've heard numerous times that English is by far the hardest language to learn simply due to its comparatively strange placing of words and the strangeness of the words themselves! It's like a language of exceptions instead of rules. My parents never taught me their native language, Italian, because they were ashamed that it was "a dialect" instead of "proper Italian". Now I find that was just an excuse (not getting into those issues here), because until the 16th century, there was no "proper" Italian language -- every area spoke its own dialect. Some of those dialects, even today, can almost be considered different languages. Try getting an Abruzzese and a Sicilian together. ;) In any case, in learning some Italian, German, and French, I am thankful that I come from a native English-speaking background. And I am also sad that "kids these days" have little to no respect for insuring that their language survives by practicing proper spelling and grammar. Yes, I hate whatever that nonsense is called that people text with. Get off my lawn! *shakes her cane* To most gamers I find myself saying, "What did the English language drop when you killed it?" :P

I think the difficulty level of a new language is dependant on what language you already know. For instance, English has more similarities say with German than French, thus for most people, German is the easier language to learn. However, Chinese has even less similarities to English than French so it's probably harder to learn than French for most English speaking people. And there's also a huge difference between being verbally proficient in a language and being able to write it correctly. That's why I admire people like Berga and others who not only speak fluent English but can write it fluently too. That's alot harder.

I've heard the same thing, that at the beginning English might seem easy since they are both from the Indo-European family, but that you'll never be able to master it. I don't have the numbers at hand but someone said you have three times more words, that's impressive! A uniform language for a whole country came up with the rise of the national state and the introduction of a public school system. It's the same here in Germany, someone from the north wouldn't understand the local dialect form someone from the south. Yes, it's sad you didn't have the chance to grow up bi-lingual, it does make learning new languages easier and it is part of your identity. I know what you mean about kids these days! :D If it gives you any comfort, they might kill the language for good, but it does raise the literacy rate, so hurray for terribad youtube comments! (Ever noticed how curse words or bad spelling/grammar don't seem to be so offensive in a foreign language?) I lol'd at the idea of a loot drop... ... ... no, dead English doesn't seem to drop anything. :'( @Bentmer Well, it took me quite some time, I was really bad at school. But the Internet provides so many chances to read, write and speak I finally got it! Still have many mistakes to make, but it's a nice skill to have. :) (They totally dropped the "riftspawns said rude things about your mom" line form the German translation, I'm so disappointed!)

I lived in Holland for many years and I was always very impressed by how well they spoke the English language. In fact, I was impressed by all the countries in Europe. Some of it can be attributed to the size of the countries in Europe and how people travel back and forth all the time from one country to another. It also amazed me how on basic television, there were always channels from other countries. When you compare that to America, we get very little exposure to other cultures like you do over there. In fact, if you look at our basic cable lineup, the BBC might be only non-American channel we have and they speak English too. That being said, I'll never understand how half the shows on the Italian tv channels seemed to involve lots of girls in bikinis and soap bubbles. lol.
