Just curious how many you get and if it's per server like WAR. I'm usually not much of an alt person but with so many options to choose from IF I decide to play this game it may take me a while to find the set up to match my play style.

I'm such an alt-a-holic that I had to work this out in Beta 4. At that time I created 6 characters on Faeblight and it let me create a couple more on another. I didn't go any further than that.
Not really sure how many slots. But one character class can have 4 Roles. Meaning, you can slot a Paladin/Reaver/Void Knight on your first Warrior role. Then, slot Champion/Paragon/Beastmaster on your second role. You can really dabble with 4 different builds using just one character class in RIFT. I've only one warrior in RIFT beta. But I've tried all souls except for Void Knight.
But . . but . . but . . how does one survive without a banker or two? Hence the need for those "extra" slots. Packrats unite! *grins*
6 slots are available. I will be using 3 as primary characters and 3 as rotator characters.
Thanks for the answers everyone. 6 should get me by long enough. Just not sure if I want to give up on WAR just yet. I know I'll be in GW2 but I only have time for 1 maybe 2 games MAX especially with a little one coming in 4 months.
My War Health bar is quickly declining. Every time I play it makes me want to stay away. Only thing keeping me going is all of you guys. It's only a matter of time before ea puts the lame dog to sleep. If it survives to April it'll be a miracle. Either way I'll be there until the lights go out leading you brave lads and lasses who try to rough it out around lol.

I'll tell you this, I hated PVP until I played WAR and especially since I joined Gaiscioch. My first and only PVP experience was on EQ1 after a friend convinced me to play on PVP server. This was in the heyday of deleveling. If you aren't familiar with that imagine an R40/RR80 dropping down to R10/RR80 and being able to keep their gear. Needless to say I died so many times just trying to get the hang of the game that it almost completely turned me off to MMOs. I usually take the squeaky wheels on the forums with a grain of salt but sadly everything is slowly starting to look like their prognostications are true. Being a former developer and now managing a group of developers (ecommerce), I truly feel bad for the developers (coders) working on the game. It's rare to find a developers who truly don't care about their work unless they've been beaten down by the company or higher management. If that's the case here then it's much more difficult for the company to turn around than the people at the bottom, the devs. None the less I'll probably keep playing WAR until my child is born (May) then play Rift until GW2 comes out. Actually, the more I read about Rift the more intriguing it sounds.
If six slots do not suffice, there is still the mail system with 90 days disposition of return mail, if I am correct.
Regarding Rift, there is still SWTOR on my list, only fading by the hour with the evolution of Rift becoming better and better.

It's 6 slots per server. I had MacDeaths on 12 different servers since Beta 2 with some other names as well. I think I have 18 characters and haven't found a limit yet.
