RIFT: Roleplayers Speak Now

Greetings,
I wanted to ask how many of you are interested in being in the Roleplay division of the Gaiscioch family when RIFT launches. Currently I have plans for 2 major branches of our tree with the possibility for 4. Being theres no Cap on the number of players (currently) you can have in a guild we may just decide to run with 1 if there is not a high demand for roleplay. I wanted to give the roleplayers a chance to speak up and let me know if they would prefer to have a "Dooooood Sweeeeetless" chat channel in the form of Gaiscioch na Anu. We would use a mutual chat channel to communicate cross guild but this would allow the chat within Anu to remain roleplay full time. So if your interested in this please let me know. Otherwise we'll just form up 1 room and stuff as many people as we can in it before having to break off the Nuada branch.

Well, when I joined Gaiscioch I decided that I would limit my roleplay to /say, /yell, etc. I do miss having guild chat be IC, but that can always be accomplished by having a separate IC channel. Also I think the the RIFT roleplaying community will have an open IC channel for everyone. Also, there are two ways of using an IC channel. One way, which I do not take part in, is basically having the channel be a tavern or a separate "instance". The other way, which is how most roleplaying guilds use it, is in the form of "communication crystals" or somesuch, depending on the particular lore of the game. Basically the channel is like a walkie-talkie. Besides the RIFT beta, I am currently playing LOTRO again with members of the Warhammer roleplaying alliance. I know Gaiscioch plays LOTRO on Elendelmir? but I have played on Landroval since LOTRO beta and Landroval is the unofficial RP server.

I hope to get into roleplaying again when Rift launches. It's been a while, the last game I RP'd in was Age of Conan, the hardest part was trying to find the time (or make the time) to RP as well as enjoy the other aspects of the game. Communication crystals would work fine in Rift, they could be telepathically linked soulstones for Guardians (It has been said that the Guardians use soulstones to commune with the Vigil), and soulstone charged clockwork devices for Defiant. I would prefer guild chat to be OOC and have a seperate Password protected IC channel if we are able to make one. The password protection would simulate that the soulstones we use are only for use by our family and most trusted allies. :)

I expect to role play a crusty old warrior. I'm cool with "Smiting mine enemies" or "melting face" it all means the same to me. I know, to many others there is a HUGE difference. I expect to have a role as a battle leader or Off-tank depending on if we are taking the fight to the defiant or doing Mobs. If you know any US Marine Gunnery Sargents (esp in a recon role). That's the part I tend to play. It saves so much time to just RP oneself :) I love tactics and strategy and will share what I have learned with anyone who would like to hear it. I AM also capable of listening to whomever has the lead and being a good soldier. BTW, to sample my RP skills, see my Thread "Ode to the Gods" in the Lore section of the Rift forums.

Well, I was never a Gunny in real life. I was a private, private 1st class, Lance Corp and finally topped out as a Corporal. But I KNEW some gunnery sargents and thats the role I play. I was in the Corps in the 60s and never expected to survive long enough to make Gunny, so I got out and became a "former Marine". It never wears off.

I would be interested. It has been sad to see a lot of the RP element dying off in MMOs.

I think most of you are right. We might want to be the ones who organize a roleplay chat channel that way you all don't have to feel off on an island and still have the communication channel to roleplay in. The Ancients Tavern aka /join TheAncientsTavern The best think about RIFT is once you join a channel it remembers it permanently. You'll only have to join it once. Same with the /join Tuatha

Hello, very new person here *waves* eager to get back into RP with RIFT. For my newbie two bits, if it is possible I would love to see both an OOC guild chat and a separate RP channel. I'll need the first to get to know you all, and the second for personality focus. Now if I can just resist my alt-a-holic nature . . . *grins*

I am new as well, joined in WAR a couple of weeks ago - I had the chance to check out Rift this weekend and it was amazing so I'm sticking with that and other things during the week atm instead of WAR. As to the RPing aspect I would be willing to RP as well, just depends on how it is implemented/how strict I guess. I have played DnD and role played in EQ and DAoC, but once again I'm not sure if I would join a separate guild to do so if it hindered progress in a major dungeon raid or in pvp - like how will vent be implemented for example? I'm more of a relaxed RPer. If rping was for events (rp groups, story lines, rping raids etc.) and guild chat than I would most definitely be in. As for the alts Zash you should only need to make 4 as far as I can tell to get the majority of play out of each of the four class types. I think I read somewhere you can have up to 4 different loadouts on one character? is this right? Oh and Fog, I saw the post about the RPing Stealther and I would gladly join you on a hunt sometime as I am definitely sticking with an assassin type build with riftsalker/assassin/infiltrator for pvp - figured I would post here while I'm at it instead of going to that post.

Yup, that's true. You only need to make 4 alts since one character can have four roles. If you're a warrior DPS and want to be a tank, just buy a role and make a tank with your existing warrior. Now you can be a tank or a DPS, whoever is needed. I bought 2 roles over the weekend and made a PvP specific character only (Paladin/Paragon/Vindicator) and a PvE DPS/Support character (Champion/Beastmaster). Two of which are very different in play style. So, I don't know how I should role-play with them.

I plan on having 2 Rouges, a Cleric as my primaries. Then have 3 toons that will be my rotator toons to help level lower level members and host fun events in the lower age brackets.

Aethenbrior that would be one messed up personality there. He/She wouldnt know to attack or deffend, could be a fun roleplay you know.

I have never RP'd before, but interested in it and I have been reading the guides over at riftrp.net. Do we have any rules on the boards here for RP, or anything setup for it? Back stories and character sheets would we just post them on the boards. I do like the idea of everyone being in a single guild and having a separate IC channel. Aethenbrior I have been thinking about the same thing about my warrior who will have a dps spec and tank spec. Tank spec is becoming tricky because a paladin and a reaver are typically mortal enemies. Reading as much lore and other back stories what I have pieced together (please correct me if I am wrong). You are who you are, and souls can be thought of as rings (similar to how they work in the movie ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’) you put on a ring (or absorb a soul) you gain that persons power, and maybe not their personality. Although I guess you could role play memory fragmentation from the soul? So a role could be thought of as the old pen and paper D&D where a caster could only memorize so many spells a day. So when you switch roles you technically just sit down and memorize a new spell.

I would have to agree on the souls being akin to jewelry to an Ascended, rather than a personality. Otherwise we'd all be schizophrenic! Though it would certainly be fun to play one messed up Ascended! I look at it basically as learning. Absorbing souls is the way our characters learn -- no need to spend decades training! There is a book in the first room you appear in the game which is the "Prophecy of the Ascended". One of the lines in it is "neither alive nor dead". To me that says that we are basically the gods' tool. This can either be a compliment or an insult depending on the personality of one's character, I think.

Hello, New blood here. I would vote for an OCC channel and a RP channel. That way guild business out of character (raid / group forms, game questions, general chat) can be in one and all the RP can be in it's separate channel. For those that don't RP, they never have to join the channel. But for some crazies like me, I would live in the RP channel. BTW is your Rift guild on the RP-PVE server?

I would like to be part of the RP section in all likelihood but I will need to see at launch for sure.

I have not done much RP in a long time but love to do it, had a lot of fun with it in DAoC. Yes I am also an Army vet, captain army nursing corp. I was an assistant operating room supervisor and a nurse psychiatric clincian before I had to medically retire. Have been looking a bit into the lore with the possibilty of creating a character role which I have not done in depth since my SWG days, would be fun.

sooooooooooooo long since i bothered roleplaying, due mostly, to lack of decent company... Rift promisses to get me back into the habit with a vengeance, though. :) I might even go for the schizo thinking ;)

I would not mind having one guild, or having two(RP + Norm) whichever has the most players that i played with in Warhammer is the one i will probably join, but who knows, ill definitely want to give RP a shot, only done it a few times.

I really never did any official roleplaying but I am willing to give it a try. Sounds like it could be fun. I will have to be coached a bit ;)

I would definitely love to rp in Rift.... my main will be a dwarf assassin/saboteur/??? not because that combo will be great in PvE or PvP but because I already have a developing story for the little feller. Haven't RP'd since Stone and Steel retired from WAR and I joined the family. Can't wait!

I used to RP but eventually got sick of the all-important, special and unique snowflake characters that everyone seems to play these days. Not looking to RP in RIFT. Is there going to be a Gaiscioch guild on a PvE/PvP server as well? I'm kinda put off by the often low populations of RP servers.

Absolutely will RP on Rift My this is gonna be awesome,so glad i left LOTRO and WOW and miss Eq2 but i must move on and find adventure in other lands

lol i am here and there but mostly every where i am all for roleplaying in rift and i would prefer a channel for both, but sadly i will not be playing much when it releases cause i will be in full swing with my long trip going back to school which this semester for some reason i thought i would try taking 16 credit course load so time on my side for gaming is dwindling down and prolly won't pick up until july.

Thumbs up for RP and a seperate com channel. Last time I had this was with DAoC, being a wizard organizing wedding parties. RIFT seems to offer quite a load of possibilities for proper roleplay. `If you do not do it yourself, do not expect it from others´ - let´s rock.

I was thinking one rogue a cleric and perhaps a mage straggling along. As I said my rp will be rusty as its been a long time so it may consist of small remarks and responses for a while.

Ya;ll are gonna make me reconsider my break with rping, aren't you? ok, ok... I'll give it a go. I'll be making a chloromancer for this. The Anti-healer class. lol We'll see how it goes....

Darn it! I always go altaholic, but I've decided to limit myself to leveling two characters (I, of course, retain the right to revoke this self imposed limit at any time in the future. HA!) After Beta4, I am in love with the total support souls. I've scrapped my assassin/sab in favor of: 44 or 51 Bard/???/??? and a main Dominator/Archon/????. Of course, they will be Dwarf (if we had gone Defiant I would've been saddened.) because to be Dwarf is to be better.

I've never been much of one to RP in MMO's, but I might give it a shot depending on what Feawin does :)

Drunken style fighting - just my kinda kidney :) Wondering if Trion would accept someone writing a book with the story related to RP events and PvP happenings - or similar stuff. My mind goes all pins and needles just thinking about it... *hops off to humiliate several squirrels*

Yet another new face here, drawn to the family via Rift, and I will be fully expecting to engage in RP. I love working in storylines for and with those who like the depth, but in my previous groups in AOC and LOTRO I worked a lot with people new to RP, including hosting "get to know you" events and various gatherings and we had some darned good times. Rift so far is a little more challenging for the practice, with limited emotes so far, but it IS still in Beta. I'll be working primarily with my Bard, here to be named Gellor (whose backstory is being tweaked to fit the setting), and will assuredly have additional alts. Bring on the tales!

I have been looking around and may have missed it, for those interested in RP (complete RP newbie here) are going have a special area for back stories and character sheets or do we just keep those for ourselves.

Terow- one possibility available now for creating RP profiles and stories is to make a blog post by going to Membership and clicking Submit Blog. You can read all of the blog posts by clicking on the Library icon. That's my plan, anyway!

I am always in Character when playing in all capacities. I use vent to "dude" speak "Har!"

I'm definately planning on doing some RP in Rift. All I need to do I read some more of the lore and form a story for my character. :) It might be kind of hard as a guardian because usually my character is an independant and doesn't really care about gods. But... I shall make it work!

I would be interested in whatever mechanism you use for a more rp centered group/branch/channel.

Just a spark of mind( or mentality): Imagine a bard on the battlefield, singing aloud while... ehm, not being nice to people of the opposite direction.

My 2 coppers say that keeping one guild with an RP channel is good. I know I will bounce back and forth between days when I want to RP and days when the mob in front of me just needs to die.

I definitely enjoy good RP. I've been playing tabletop, pencil & paper RPG's since the late 70's, so it' sin my blood. My first 2-or-so years in WoW was in a great RP guild. Guild chat was all IC, and they had a guild OOC channel. In retrospect, I think it would have been more successful the other way around. But, we really got into the lore, did all kinds of events, and had a great time together. One of my favorite events was first-person walks. We'd pick a starting and ending location, turn off our UI's, zoom all the way in to first person, and make the trek from location to location without maps or overhead views... we had to rely on our ground-level knowledge of the geography. Of course, this was best done by high level characters in low-level zones, and we'd need Vent to communicate. Good times!

Coming late to the topic (and largely to Rift, as well). I haven't really rp'd consistently since Shadowbane, when I was in a large amazon guild (and one of less than a handful of rl males; there were so few of us most just assumed I was female--it was years before some found out differently, since guild chat was IC only ;-) ). It would be nice to have both ooc and ic channels. IC only gets too convoluted for my taste. :) I will definitely be in the open beta, and am hoping I'll be able to scrape together enough pennies to pre-order in time for the head start. Looking forward to reuniting with those I knew from my time in WAR and meeting those of you I haven't yet.

I am not sure of what this "roleplay" is that you speak. I am Morigana, Stormcaller of the North and I have a half sister Beannighe, a harbinger of Death as well as distant cousin Rayvyn (we don't like to talk about her too much), an assassin. We'd all be interested in joining you - for what ever it is that you do. :) ps. I'm a tad schizo at times.

I don't RP. If I do, it only goes as far as my character's general attitude. If I turn out to focus on healing, I'll be one of the nicest people to know, however, catch me on a PvP build and I'll be a complete jerk. Then again, how hard is it to dive a bit into the RP realm and come up with a solid character bio and what not? Wouldn't hurt to give it a whirl.

Gatts... sometimes, RP is as simple as an internal, mental thing that has nothing to do with how you interact with others. If you take the time to speak to the NPC's, read the quest text, appreciate your surroundings, and get a really good feel for WHY you're doing what you're doing, then you're role-playing. For example, if you go out and kill a bunch of goblins so you can turn in a quest for XP and some silver, then move on to kill something else so you can turn in another quest for XP and some silver, then that's grinding. BUT, if you go out and help slow the advance of Goblin Scouts & Goblin Escorts in the Sterling Hills to protect the western flank of Argent Glade and, therefore, earn the gratitude of the students and faculty of Quicksilver College... then it doesn't matter if you have a grasp on "in character" chat. You're roleplaying.

I would really enjoy having a RP guild again. That would go for the three others that joined up when I did, Alauniira, Thoroth, and Meraslyss.

Gatts - Drazulfel - is right. It becomes easy for me to RP my characters once I have a sense for their attitude and where they stand in the world. Raeding the stories at the beginning of the quests gives me that - and then once I have a background story (such as a chosen Guardian) then I begin to adopt that attitude in the game. I imagine that I am part of an animated adventure - how would the authour write my character and what would they do (given my background story and the pupose of the quest). Amd to me - it sounds like you do take on their persona somewhat ... Gatts ... and that is all it takes - then to speak in chat as if you are that character. Real life stays out of it - but there isn't a problem incorporating some of your RL experiences into you character. You just don't want to refer to your favorite sports team in RP Chat - since that team/sport doesn't exist in the lore of the game.

I appreciate the replies, however, I know what role playing is. Still, I don't do it except for the example I gave regarding my general attitude while playing certain classes. I read quests, hell I read tons of game lore while not playing, but I don't go acting that I'm actually doing what the story says or acting like I'm really doing that quest for that reason. I'm thinking we have quite a bit of a difference in what we define as not role playing verses role playing and where the line is drawn. When I think of definable role playing, I think of D&D. If you have ever played that, then you could understand in what I mean about character biography, developing a background and following a set of rules to play that character by. Draz, I would have thought you would understand being a person that played paper RPGs. It's apparent though that your drawn line starts pretty early compared to mine.
