Orbs will be removed from WvW in an upcoming build.

After a careful reevaluation of orbs of power we have decided to remove them from WvW in an upcoming build. As implemented, orbs tend to strengthen teams who are already winning and make it even more difficult for underdog teams to fight back. In addition, the current implementation seems to be irresistible to hackers/cheaters and will require significant modification to prevent cheaters from having an unfortunately large impact on the state of any given WvW game. Under the circumstances we believe that removing orbs completely is a better choice than attempting an in-place redesign/re-implementation as it will immediately put a stop to all orb hacking. It is likely that orbs, or some orb-like mechanic, will return at some point in the future, but only after we are confident that they will not exhibit the sorts of issues that we see with orbs today.

I'm not sad about this change, but I'm a little sad at their justification. Granted, orbs only really help the winners win harder, but to specifically call out the hacking and cheating as a reason for the change makes me nervous. "We don't know how to stop the bad guys, so we're removing the mechanic" is a bit of a slippery slope. "We can't figure out how to stop the botters, so we're removing Rangers from the game." "We don't see a way to stop TP botting, so we're removing the TP from the game." Those are extremely unlikely, of course, but that's where you wind up if you take that justification a step further.

Removal seems to be a bandaid fix. I hope they do something to improve it in the future. It seems ANet have been catering to the squeakiest wheel lately, whether they are in damage control or they have some master plan idk. Chap also said that they are looking at reducing Backstabs base damage, which tells me that they really aren't thinking things through.

I don't see why it can't be a buff for.. you know.. doing something in WvW. Do something that brings the "favor of the gods" to your realm, and be rewarded with the buff. Have WvW oriented dynamic events that will call out a target every 30min-1hr, "X Demands Dreaming Bay Keep" whoever owns it at the end of a 1-2 hour period, gets the bonus until the next one opens up. Heck, I don't know.. there are tons of ways to "re-do" it without removing it.

As long as it's temporary, I think this might actually a really smart move. Reading the GW2 Forums, you get the impression that the Orb Bonuses have a far greater impact than they actually do. Majority of complainers on the forums are giving off the impression that a team with 3 Orbs is completely unbeatable, and that no-doubt ripples through communities and effects morale across entire servers. The majority seem to think that the Orbs are the cause of one server dominating the others, completely ignoring that one server has to have the tactical edge over both opposing servers in order to obtain and keep hold of them in the first place. It'll probably be a good thing in the long run to remove this particular excuse from play for a little while and give the WvWvW population a time-out from the Orb effects and assess just how big an impact the Orb Bonuses really had on the results. Personally, I would have preferred the simple swap of the Orb and Outmanned buffs that seems very popular on the forums, but Anets current solution might not be as knee-jerk as it first appears.

How about removing the orb effects from WvWvW, but leave them up for PvE? Gives a purpose to the bloodshed. Like the Relics were back in the day.

I completely agree with Dargron about the ability of one side being able to obtain and keep the orb in the first place is proof of having tactical superiority. Im not real happy they are removing them completely. Yes they provide a pretty big advantage, but its not game breaking - look at last weeks match up with SoS, we held the orbs the majority of the time and STILL lost. They should have just made it so the buff does not stack. Whether you hold one or all three the total buff amount is 5%. The incentive to hold all three would be that you are preventing the enemy from having that 5% buff also. Thats enough reason to hold all three, IMO. The orbs made sense in matches that were more balanced. It was an added incentive to attack one particular server or keep over another... made things more unpredictable as far as where exactly the enemy would attack next because everyone WANTS the orbs. Also, it provided a slight defensive element. If server A holds the orb in the Bay Keep and is attacking Hills Keep which belongs to server B, server B could send out an attack at Bay keep and delay/halt the attack at the Hills Keep by threatening the orb and drawing attention to the other side of the map. Server A would most likely return to protect the orb rather than keep pushing into Hills Keep because they want to keep the orb at the Bay. Now we'll probably just swap keeps and call it a day. We'll probably see a lot more keep swapping as well as less upgrading because that added incentive to hold and defend a particular keep isnt there. There wont be the panic of "OH NO! everyone to garrison! they're after the orb!" We've had multiple WvW event nights where the primary goal was either 1) protect the orb by any means OR 2) GET THAT ORB! Now that wont be there anymore. Im curious to see exactly how it works out. I predict it will make things a little less interesting.

I am ok with this for now, now I can participate in other events other than babysit the orb or steal the orb; which is pretty subjective as to who likes these events. It never occurred to me that orbs play that big a difference, but at 3 orbs it does seem harder to fight back if i consider forces with equal size and skill (and this is the kind of WvW I'd like to be playing in), which then by accident who loses the orb first will have a harder time coming back (in general), then WvW would seem too orb centered; so I assume this is what Anet believes is the case right now, then the hard to deal with hackers. If they want a quick balance fix, they can give a small debuff to orb holders, for every orb your world has, your rendering range is reduced :D Which is pretty humorous because of the common rendering issues people bump into, so yeah you're stronger... but as you have become more powerful, your power and ego has now made you shortsighted. :D

Not sure if it would be a fix, but why not have the orbs buff PvE instead? They may not seem as enticing to hackers if it doesn't affect the stats in WvW.

I'd sooner let the bonus be an unlockable guild perk for owning one of the 4 major keeps.

the reason i cheer is that it stops most all the omghax posts in the gw2 forums. I read different server wvwvw posts and that is what is predominately in there...one server calling out another for hacking orbs....maybe now we can play for a bit without all the complaining for at least a week :).

Nothing will stop the wvwvw complaining. There will always be something. Bad losers and bad winners = lots of whining. All we can do is give it our best fight and ignore the negativity.

I would like to see the orbs provide some non-stat bonuses...Perhaps extra karma/xp/magic find. So, there would be an incentive to attain but, it wouldn't make your toon more powerful.

Too often they've made the choice not to fix the problem but to cover it up with a diff change. I think WvW can go on without orbs, but it's good design to have something that's not just taking objectives involved.
