Your thoughts on the queue?

Love GW2, with one exception....the dreaded WvWvW queue.  Last night I queued from Lion's Arch as soon as I possibly could, about 15 minutes early.  The borderland is full of course.  Waited for well over an hour, and having heard before that if the wait is that long you might be bugged, I re-queued.  Finally after about another half hour I get in.   At that point had a great time once I hooked up with our group.

My question is, what do you think the future will hold as far as queues?  I know AN has been working on  bugs and such, and that they have said to give things a little time for server populations to normalize.  But do you think the queue is here to stay?  For me, I had really planned on focusing on WvW in GW2, but limited playtime and queues don't really mix.  So for me, it's changed how I approach the game.  I'm still having fun, but honestly I'm a bit disappointed.  I had imagined once again reliving those glory days of DAOC.

And one final thought...a big thank you to Fog and our leadership for allowing those of us who are in the queue and ready to go to claim participation.  It takes a little of the sting out of the disappointment of not being in there with the family.  Just wanted you to know it's appreciated.

If they fix the queue so it actually lets you in using the order you queued up instead of some random lottery, that should help. At least then when a lot of family queues up shortly before/after an event starts we should get in more efficiantly.

They have said they are looking into it. The invisible player issue is a huge concern too I think.

I wouldn't requeue. It will put you back at the end of the line. Your best bet at this point is to get in as early as possible then just wait however long it takes. I would expect the queues to shorten over time but still be there at prime time (and especially when we have events) for a while. Long term they will probably have to do something about it like add more maps. I don't think raising the caps are much of an option considering the performance issues involved. One thing that we may have to do some day is split our force into 2 and attack 2 different zones rather than try to get everybody into one (and ending up with a lot of people unable to get in at all).

Well, I think if ANet does not make any changes that server populations will start to spread out a bit reducing queues some, but they will still exist. If they still exist after a while I think some people will leave the game making the queues even smaller. I don't think ANet will want people leaving the game though, so I'm willing to bet they'll figure out a way to reduce the queues to very short times if any wait at all is required. This will all take time though. There was a post a while ago that a dev posted that they were suprised at how many people wanted to take part in W3. I have a feeling that might be an understatement and that in their original designs they did not plan at all for this level of participation.

I know from a fact straight from my contact at AN's mouth that a fix for Queues is on the way. They just had to rebuild a chunk of the game for it to get in place. It's a case of a Bug causing a bigger issue and if they fix the issue it caused before the bug it would cause an even bigger issue. Their fixing Bug A before tackling Bug B. All should be resolved in the coming weeks. As ALWAYS Patience Prevails. I know the Queues suck but it's a temporary problem and this too shall pass. Hang tight guys and know better days are on the horizon.

Also keep in mind this is the first game in the HISTORY of the INTERWEBS!!!!! to TURN OFF SALES. They had such a mad rush into their game that they had to stop sales of their game to allow them to get more servers and architecture in place. They sold over 2 million copies in the first 2 weeks. Mists of Pandoria only sold 600,000 units in their first 2 days. Thats quite a rush and there is no way to compensate for that kind of population smashing into your product.

Another stat to notice is World of Warcraft has claimed that their Peak Active user base was 800,000 concurrent users. Guild Wars 2 just recorded their record at: 400,000 concurrent users. For a Game that had 11.5 Million Subscribers and a high of 800,000 concurrent users, Guild Wars 2 having 400,000 with a fraction as many purchased copies and servers available is quite impressive.

Every game starts out this way. There is a massive groundswell of people who play at release, everything crashes, queue times go through the roof for everything, and some aspects of the game simply don't function. Bugs and hacking abound, as the developer realizes that, no matter how good their QA process was, it's garbage compared to millions of players. Thankfully, this is a self-solving problem. The lag, bugs, hacking, crashing, and queues drive people away from the game, or people hit the maximum level and leave, until the population stabilizes at a number closer to what the developer expected and planned for. As people stop playing, the queues vanish, and the lag lets up. The developer fixes bugs and crashes. Features come back online, and the game becomes playable again. I've played every major MMO title since Anarchy Online released in 2001, and every single one of them has had this problem. The industry knows about it. I'm sure ArenaNet expected and planned for it. Did you see how they didn't panic and add 25 new servers right away? Do you notice how they aren't making sweeping long term changes to fix a short term problem? They've done their homework, and are apparently pretty good at planning (which they should be, most of them came from Blizzard). This is one of the smoothest releases I've ever seen. If the WvW queue messes with you that much, go play something else for a bit while everything calms down. This seems to be a pretty popular game, so I would give it until Halloween, maybe Thanksgiving at the latest, before things calm down and the queues go away (or get to a reasonable wait time during peak hours).

It's not that it messes with me, it's a matter of just adjusting to the situation. My question really is how the mechanic of an open-world PvP environment with capped number of players participating will adjust in a game this popular. I've participated in a lot of open world PvP going back to Ultima Online beta. Many games have had no queue for open world PvP play. DAoC being a fine example. The problem then becomes winner equals who brings more people to the party. The mechanic of queues is perfectly suited for arenas, dungeon instances, and smaller battlegrounds. But what I'm pondering is how it plays out long term on a much larger scale. Thanks Fog for the insight from AN, and to all for your thoughts.

I know it was touched on earlier, but ANet had said that WvWvW was intended for the more casual players that would not necessarily get into PvP, and sPvP would be where all the people would go. So, saying that they didn't expect this kind of turnout for WvWvW is not surprising whatsoever. i.e.: They grossly underestimated the popularity of WvWvW and pooled more of their resources into sPvP, and it shows. I'm not saying this is good or bad, they just executed their plan based on their expectations. You can't fault them for that. As with any game, things will improve over time, we just have to get through the "growing pains" first.

One thing that I have wondered about is whether it would be good to have 2 areas that we go to at the same time. one team in SoR, one team in another borderland. I know that the barrier to this is people who are willing and able to lead larve pvp events aren't very common.

Flarewind, that will be much easier as we get more Commander Books on the field. Right now Spartan and I are the only 2 during primetime that have them. I would like 2 commanders on every field we represent on. It will take some time to pull this off.

Next time I'm stuck in queue, I think I'll try to hop into another borderlands and play there while I wait for the Gaiscioch borderlands to pop. At least then I'm playing and learning while I wait... I think it would cut down alot on any of my frustration. I have a TON to learn anyway, like the great dark mystery that is Siege Equipment.

I'm wondering how the queue had me in 45mins and my son got in 2 and half hours later when we both queued the same time. I know this will be fixed soon though. Side note. Had a lot of fun running with the family and can't wait to do it again.

@Fatal. The queue system is currently a random lottery so its not based off of when you queued. Also to all... it could be alot worse. there are some servers out there where the average queue time(not peak) is 9 hours. Some people out there queue up when they start to play and can go the entire day without a queue pop-up. The main moral of the story though is.... Patience is a virtue.

Wouldn't it be great to get our guild tag running around all four maps in parallel, capping and dominating them all? As more of us get more proficient with WvW, maybe we'll have the resources to get group events going on all four like that. Then memebers could queue all four and join whichever they get into first.

The only time I have a Queue is during my Saturday/Sundays. I would much rather have a Queue and people to play with than my current predicament of logging on after the majority of our server goes to sleep and having 100 v 100 v 5 in WvWvW. I'm tired of it. We have next to no Oceanic WvWers on our server. I'm literally looking at our only 2 supply camps after we had dominated the whole day. Not much point in me playing right now.

@Kale: Honestly, we would ultimately have a greater impact if we started off running small groups on all four WvW fronts, and then choose which one we want for the main group that night. Reason being, there will always be some sort of zerg running around at any given time that will manage to capture objectives, but there is an even greater need for those strike teams that run out and keep/disrupt supplies. I only bring this up because I ended up pseudo-leading the general population on the Eternal Battlegrounds last night. We managed to capture and hold Stonemist (still had it before I went to bed), but with SF and DH double-teaming us, it was nigh impossible to do much else without a coordinated secondary force to move around the map and help keep our supplies flowing. Unfortunately that was my first time in there, but it ended up being a very good learning experience on how that map ends up working out, and emphasized how important "Dagger" teams can be.

Fixing the queue order bug will definately improve the game but it won't do anything about queue times due to a LOT of players wanting to play WvW. If the map only allows 500 players from your server and your #200 in the queue, you could still end up waiting a long time to play. Not certain if AN should be concerned with that and its something you just have to suck it up and deal with.

Please read my comments above. ArenaNet is working on the queue solution as we speak. I can't delve more details. Let's give this topic a rest and move on.
