The Mad Gadget Engineer Build

Hey guys,

I'm itchingly close to lvl capping my engineer and I've been pondering several builds to use.  At first I thought of using a typical Static Discharge burst build, but I've now recently tried out the HGH Might Stacking condition build.

Both are fun solid builds, I highly recommend at least trying them once to anyone wanting to try an engineer.  But I found both of them lacking in personal flavor, I've never been a fan of burst builds and boon stacking via juggling CDs is not my forte either.  Knowing this, I looked to gadgets.

I know a number of engineers in the audience are probably screaming MADNESS!!!  I know, but in the face of personal preferences I am definitely mad....*queue evil laugh now*

To that end, I present the Very Work In Progress - The Mad Gadget Engineer

The Mad Gadget Engineer v1.1

The Mad Gadget Engineer v1.2

I implore the more experienced engineers out there to look at this build and give me your honest opinion and thoughts on improving it.  To that end, know that I am deadset on finding an acceptible gadget build, so any advice to further that directive will mean a lot to me.

Thanks guys and gals,

I assume, by the traits, that you are trying to do a wvw build? Nowsday´s it´s kinda a hard to make a gadget build(even devs have admited thta gadgets are lackluster new). You are looking for what kind of role? direct damage, condition? Since you are using pistols, I´m assuming you are going for condition. Stackable (bloodlust and Corruption) Sigils do not stack well. You are only going to get the benefit of one of them. Maybe use a on swap sigil would work better? If you are going for both power and condition damage, you should consider switching a few pieces for carrion. It would also provide some vitality. As for traits: You already gave speedy kits, so you are not going to get a benefit from power shoes.(I believe speedy buffs do not stack). I would take alway 10 points from inventions and put either in tools for Power Wrench if you are using toolkit often ou in firearms for Rifled barrels for better range, since you main weapon looks like to be the pistols. I would also change Explosive Descent for cloaking divice as it has more utility(and can mess up some combos that count on you being imob). You can then stun breaker out with rocket boots and leave your enemy a little lost about your location. Utilities: Toolkit is a solid kit, has a lot of defensive abilites, a good ranged one(toolbelt) and also the almighty prybar. Rocket boots is actually a decent stun breaker, not as good as Elixir S in a zerg encouter, but pretty good againts a few opponents. Rocket kick is a really good burn skill as I´m sure you already know. :) Mines could be useful in controllibg a fight with it´s knockback and boon removal, although I believe you would be much better using the bomb kit. But then it would not be a gadget build. =P As for the heal, I personally did not like the way the healing turret works now. I think the medkit is the best heal for non support/non elixir based builds. Hope this helps, I wrote those imagining how I would play your build from a wvw perspective. :)

Thanks Abend, For clarity, this is intended for WvW/PvE From your feedback, I've further tweaked the build to get rid of Speedy Kits and all points from the Alchemy line due to the Power Shoes redundancy. I knew they didn't stack, but the idea was to have a little extra boost when switching to Tool Kit. In it's place, I've added 10 points to the Firearms line, picked up Napalm Specialist, and swapped Speedy Kits with Speedy Gadgets. Lastly, I switched the sigils to Fire and Nullification (it was my understanding that you can equally stack both corruption and bloodlust, but assuming you can't on-crit sigils are more appealing). Updated build The Mad Gadget Engineer v1.1

To me, the engy might just be the most versatile class out there - and I think that is very much intended and also her biggest strength. You can play her as a condition build, burst damage build, melee, medium range, long range, bunker, healer... the list just goes on and on. The most important thing is to feel passion for your build and love playing it... you'll always play better when you do. With that said, I agree with what Abend stated and can't add anything beyond that, except you might play around with Elixir Gun if you haven't - it gives you some shots that place conditions on foes and a very good healing that adds to any other healing ability you use (in the tool belt and on the skill bar). I personally find mines too haphazard for my use but if you don't like to change in and out too much then I understand that. I love changing from dual pistols to elixir gun, to bomb kit and dropping supply crates... Engy is just awesome fun and my favorite character in both PvE and WvWvW.

Hello again, Your build is getting interesting :) You should use only one sigil with internal cooldown(on crit/on swap) since as long one sigil is on cooldown, no other sigil that has a internal cooldown can proc. You should mix a on kill sigil with one of those on crit. There really tons of complicated rules about sigils. You cancheck the wiki page for details if you didn´t already. :) http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Sigil

Oh bloody hell, I just can't win with you can I? ;) Yeah I just plain didn't know about the ICD conflict rule on sigils. I hit 80 last night so I was able to put together a bit of this and it seems like it could work with practice. However, no swiftness takes quite a bit getting used to. In combat it's not so noticeable thanks to Power Shoes. Additionally, I didn't realize it at the time, but in it's current incarnation, The Mad Gadget Engineer is sitting on 3 low CD blast finishers, and 2 low CD water fields. Seems like something worth abusing to me. Updated Build - The Mad Gadget Engineer v1.2

not a fan of the toolkit myself, but I've seen a few engies run around with them, u can search fro confusion builds and u will find a lot of builds with.. the confusion stacks crazy and well can kill very fast specially on small groups and 1vs1 ... I've seen one take out my guard in about 2 seconds simply because he stacked that confusing at the same time as I started a skill rotation. killed myself before I notice what was going on..... good luck with your build looks nice. not my style but I know a lot of ppl running with something similar these days

Confusion was nerfed for WvW this last patch, it was changed to how it performs in sPVP. I haven't bothered to follow forums to see what the reaction has been.

Indeed, confusion was nerfed rather heavily in WvW, though it still hits like a truck. Especially in the middle of a zerg where you can get hit by several players stacking it on you. Engineers can cope pretty well with it since the class has an apparent equal love for all of the condition types. Mesmers were clearly hit the worst. Playing this weekend in WvW and a fractals run, I think I've eventually settled on this build being finalized with the provision that the Tool Kit is a floating utility to be replaced by either Bomb Kit or Grenade Kit when necessary. The mines are proving to be quite useful as a knockdown, boon stripper, and melee punisher all in one. I've also got the timing down where I can trigger 3 blast finishers in one of the two water fields I have available for 3 water field explosions (an AOE 1300hp for each). All in all, a very fun build with at least a passable level of performance. It won't break into the sPvP meta, but that doesn't matter much to me.
