Just sharing a fun mesmer build for PVE levelling that I'm using.  It's also really group friendly since your passing around random boons and curing conditions.  You're weapon of choice for this one is the staff, and your 6-10 skills are:

Thanks for the post Twilah! I actually built my mesmer as a tank and it is wildly successful, but I am not having much fun playing it at all so I have been looking for an alternative build. I have been working on a staff-support Mez build and I think I might like something similar to this with a few tweaks of my own. ;-) My question on this build is that it seems heavily geared towards Confusion damage...do you find that most mobs attack fast enough for Confusion to be a viable source of damage? In my experience I have found that so many mobs (especially bosses) spend so much time either using skills that don't trigger confusion or attacking so slowly it barely has any effect. Any suggestions on Runes and Signets and gear stat priorities? I am assuming condition damage would be the way to go here... Also, what skills does this build use that qualify as Skill Interrupters to trigger the vulnerability stacks? Just as note: You have Sharper Images listed as the Major Trait selection and the Minor Trait selection for Dueling.

So following up here, I actually went ahead and tried my mesmer out with a build like this just to see what would happen in a fractal and a couple of dungeon runs last night. I am not entirely sure how effective I was, but it was certainly a lot more fun! Here is the spec I ended up going with: Phantom's Mez Staff Support Swapped out the cripple trait for some extra damage via Mind Wrack, which I found myself using almost constantly. By choosing Deceptive Evasion (create clone on dodge) and combining that with the very high Vigor uptime this build has, I found I was able to pretty much constantly have three clones up whenever I wanted AND was able to drop Mirror Images and Decoy in order to turn on some more beneficial utilities (Null Field, Feedback, Blink, etc). The white numbers from this build are admittedly very low, however there are a bunch of them when you have a second to get some conditions rolling. Plus I found I could frequently 20+ stack Vulnerability all by myself without much difficulty, and almost always have at least 8 or so up on any mob. Add to that the huge amount of boons being tossed around via Winds of Chaos, Chaos Storm, and Signet of Inspiration and there is some seriously nice support there. Still not sure on the confusion thing; I found I could get stacks on there of 4-8 pretty regularly, and they do hit pretty hard (1600-2000), but usually only activated once at most. Does Confusion count as a condition, subject to increases from +Cond Duration and +Cond Damage? Also it turns out that using F3 skill Diversion pretty much counts as interrupt at all times. Even on mobs and bosses immune to any kind of crowd control, I saw Interrupt spamming across my screen when I hit them with one of those. After playing with this a bit I think I agree that Illusionary Persona (shatter on yourself as well) is not the way to go with this build, and I am trying to decide between Master of Misdirection as you suggest for the longer confusions, or Imbued Diversion for huge AoE vulnerabilities. I think it will just have to be swapped back and forth depending on the scenario for maximum effectiveness. I went with Sigil of Peril for lack of a better option and it actually does help quite a bit keeping all that Vuln up, but if anyone has a better suggestion I would be glad to hear it. Also looking like Rune of the Nightmare may be the way to go here, as I don't think power or crit stacking is going to be of much benefit in the big picture. Thanks again for getting me started here Twilah! Would love some feedback if anyone else was crazy enough to build a mesmer this way. :D

Confusion is not really of viable use for PvE, right now. Sadly, NPCs don't activate their skills often enough for Confusion to tick as well as it should, for example: when used against another player. Its a design flaw that hopefully ArenaNet will someday fix, but I fear might require an overhaul of the NPC combat system. Since its just one condition type that isn't commonly used, its probably not a high priority for them. :\ So, taking that into consideration, while I did build Nelfaar for Crit/Confusion, I also built in heavy support for other Condition-based damage attacks. This ensures that she can still rockstar out in WvW and tPvP, as well as be as highly effective for PvE, especially Fractals. She's not as effective in dungeons as other Mesmer builds, and I would definitely not recommend her build for dungeons. (Although I am learning how to make it work, and its working better than I expected.) So my recommendation is to not rely on Confusion for PvE, but instead, factor in other conditions as well as other damage type alternatives.

Just the build I am using and it's fun. I wave my little toy staff, and if the get in my face I distort and use the pointy end of my long sword. Focus on illusions and condition effects/damage. Works well with Tostitos. Things are dying and they're not me, so I call it success.
