Abbriviated it means this:
It is believed that all your bonuses to the stats are added up and that modifies the drop tables. So if you have 2 bonuses of 50% magic find for example you would end up with 100% magic find. So if a mob had a 5% to drop a 'fine' quality crafting ingredient or piece of equipment that chance would be doubled to 10%. I must caution that this is not fact and still being tested, because current smaller tests seem to indicate that magic find is actually more effective that what is described above.
As it's pointed out below, Magic Find also helps when you salvage and it's speculated it helps when you open loot bags and unidentified dyes.
Bottom line is it can help, and moreover it might actually help more than you might think. So I've put together a list of attributes you'll want to look for in gear if you want to start making use of good magic find values. There are a few general rules I used:
- Economy over quality. I didn't aim for the best of the best, I aimed for the best economically feasible, after all, you're doing this to make money not to spend it.
- You will sacrifice uber stats for uber magic find and gold.
- Use a group aoe build for traits/skills. You can make best advantage of this using aoe on large mobs when there are a few others around to help. Loot tables and xp seemed to be linked to the longevity of certain mobs. Meaning the longer they've been in the world since they spawned the more valueable they become to kill in terms of loot AND xp. I seem to find this is especially so for "conquering" event mobs. For example, Centaur camps in the Harati Highlands. Put down stupid amounts of AOE on these guys so you get as many drops as you can.
- I can't tell from experience but I'm thinking it would be best to take the opposite approach in a dungeon. Dungeons may actually be less profitible using this method because the big sellable items are usually given as chest rewards. Mob drops aren't all that special (at least not in the story modes I completed) and each npc is more powerful so per drop you spend more time killing them. In my mind it's better to find a place where you increase the drop rate by having more, less powerful npcs to farm. It probably wouldn't hurt in the low level dungeons, but in higher level ones if you spend much more time per npc because your stats are low you're actually lowering your total profit/hour.
The Details
- Armor needs to be in the Explorer's prefix. This gives 3% magic find per piece of armor.
6x3=18
- Adding upgrades to that armor : 5x Superior Rune of the Noble, Pirate, or Traveler and 1x of the Superior Rune of the Noble, Pirate, or Traveler ** Look at the stats! If you like Might do 5x Pirate, if you want Power go for 5x Noble, etc. Then for the sixth rune just choose one that's NOT the variety you chose before. This will give an additional 10% Magic find.
10+15+25+10=60
- Look for 5x Platinum Opal (or better) variety accessories and ADD 6x Ornate Opal (or better), Platinum Dabloons, or Medallian/Crest of the Traveler to each upgrade slot including back. That's 1x amulet, 2x rings, 2x earrings, and 6x upgrades total. I don't know of any back items with magic find by default, but you can give them an upgrade. Each of these provides 3% magic find. (You can find 4% on some accessories and upgrades but I don't think it's worth it).
3x5+3x6=33
- Now for the Weapons. Look for Traveler's Weapons, they should give 3% magic find while equipped. Then add one Superior Sigil of Luck to the weapon set you plan to end on. This is a stacking bonus based on enemies downed. You must have this weapon equipped when you kill an npc to add to the stack. A full stack of 25 adds 15% magic find.
Max of 3+(3)+15=21
- Now food. Chocolate Omnomberry Cream or Omnomberry Bar or Chocolate Orange depending on current level and money. 40%, 30%, and 28% respectively. Lets assume 30%.
30
Grand Total: 162%
162% magic find. With a max (I think) of 176% (with max values on everything I could find). Meaning you're nearly 2.6 times more likely to get a magic item per drop than you were before.
Happy hunting.
