So, what do you people think about a Carrion/dire set for non-DH guard? Carrion for weapons and Dire for armor.

I've always been a squishy Guard, but kinda fast at DPS, a glass cannon if you will. Never got used to the defensive traits of the class at first but i'm kinda getting the hang of it now. Would the Dire stats help me get more tank-y while also giving me some more condi damage? Or should I go with Knight/Soldier?

For which game mode?  General PvE?  Dungeons/Fractals?  WvW?  Raids?

I would take a look at metabattle for starters and modify that site's recommendations to fit your play style, budget, and preferences.  For example, in WvW if you like to roam solo or in small groups, you may want more toughness and vitality to ensure that you can win a 1v1 or 2v2.  For dungeons and fractals, berserker gear seems to the standard.

Which skills and weapons are you using?  How often are you applying condi's with your build?  These are also some things to think about.  But in general if you're dying often against even level mobs adding in the T & V is a good idea; I tend to use trinkets to give a slight boost to my survivability and keep my weapons and armor mostly damage oriented.
