So my take on this is that they replace the linkshell as the traditional "guild" structure.  We need 3 players over level 25 to create one, I think. Then we get perks and stuff. Which is nice :)

Hopefully we can start one on the first or second day!

Has there been any rhyme/reason to the names of other branches, official or not, like the one in Neverwinter or Defiance?

Would we want it to be something also pulled from Celtic mythology, or just whatever floats our boat? (as long as it's not "That's What She Said").

Well, Fog has said that FFXIV:ARR will not be an official Saighdear or anything supported, so I assume that folks can do or create whatever they want.  I have my own brand, Waelwulfas, but its fate is up in the air and under review right now, so I haven't decided what I want to do.  I will of course still play on Excalibur, but as to the extent of joining a Free Company that's not associated with the Gaiscioch or Waelwulfas brands, I just don't know right now.

I plan on coming up with a few names and see'ing which one feels the best and is the most relevant. Since we arent an official branch, we have alot more freedom with the name of the guild...Regardless its not going to be something ridiculas and offensive.

Theme with most guilds as i look through the 100's of free companies, seem to be mostly in lore, or relatively close to it. Will probably follow suit on that and come up with something fun, easy to pronounce and easy to remember.

Stay tuned!

Oh, wanted to comment on my previous post.  Here's the thing for me with FFXIV:  Its a subscription game, therefore I tend to take it more seriously than I do a B2P or F2P, like Defiance, Neverwinter, RIFT, even Guild Wars 2.  So while I don't mind a "casual, unstructured" guild environment in those games, I really prefer it in a subscription game.  I view my subscription time as "every hour costs $", so I generally try to maximize my time.  Its an OCD thing I guess, but its how I manage my gaming time.

So with FFXIV, I love you guys, enjoy the time I spend with you all in GW2 and all that, but I'm just not sure if I'll be comfortable with a lack of community structure.  There have been so many F2P games release since GW2, and Fog's creation of the Saighdear program, that I think we got used to the casual hook-ups in these other games, and adopted a more... "come what may" attitude for getting together and doing stuff.  If someone plays, cool, if not, that's ok too.  Hope that makes sense.

So, my question for this FC is: How serious is it going to be, especially if "unsupported" as an extention of the Family?  We've broken into the F2P frontier and things have worked out pretty well, but this is the first paid subscription game that we've run into since RIFT.  I don't want to seem like I'm putting pressure on Connor or Hex, especially since Connor has already said that he doesn't want to lead (I think) but since this is a Pay 2 Play game, it might be   a good idea to establish some expectations and what not.

Reasonable?

If you are looking for an end game raiding guild, server first and maximising progression this may not be the right choice for you. Connor and I both come from that background in Wow but now have real life careers, families and things other than gaming to focus on.

I have not started a Saigdhear even though I am of rank to do so, because I do not want to let anyone down around final exam times. I am here to support Connor in whatever he decides is best, and have fun with other people who love FFXIV. I do not plan to be the boss, but rather to facilitate a group environment for players interested.

My plan is for a guild where you can progress towards that if you want to, and I will join in happily. We have several ex raid leaders and ex guild leaders in our midst already. But there will not be pressure or "sell your soul to the game" type elitism or any of that nonsense.

As Connor already mentioned, those who wish to progress and do endgame will do so by formng groups, starting raids, instance parties, world boss kills etc.  Those who like crafting will craft.  Those who like to level every job and go slowly will do that.  Each to their own is my philosophy.

I raid, I make groups in gchat, I do all of endgame, but I do it at a pace that others I play with are comfortable with. If exams or real life calls, I simply stop what I am doing and attend to that.  But when I play, I min max and organise groups to beat content.  I like to use the term "efficient casual". Get endgame done, maximise your time in game, but real life career and family are number one priorities.

Of course, we won't know what we "can do" til release day and interest and numbers dictate. The game will be what the players choose to make of it.

My guess is: a lot more focused and organised that Nwn, but this is not Gaiscioch in GW2. Players will take the initiative and form groups, usually dictated by what time they are on.  If we have 24 people wanting to do raids, then that will evolve. If we don't, then it won't. That's about as specfic as I can be.

For example, Fog will be the first to admit he does not ever organise or lead raids. So there was no endgame pve provided by the draios at launch in early Rift.   So, Ironbars and Bentmer started the first raid groups for 25s, and myself, Bentmer, Ironbars and Wildflower ran 10 mans. We each worked out our own schedule and did what we felt happy with. Ben focused on community and Telara Saga, and we looked after raiding off our own initiative.

I envisage a similar scenario in endgame pve in FFXIV (but without Fog and the Telara Saga part, which was far to labour intensive and way outside the scope of this smaller venture.) Those who want to lead raids will do so, and ask for others to join them. However, this is NOT Gaiscioch in GW2 transferred to a pve game.  Please be really clear in your mind on that :) Nobody will mind if someone wants to go off and be a raidstar in a hardcore guild, in fact, I encourage people to do that if that is their interest.

That is just my thoughts, and really we make no promises.  A guild is what you make of it in any game :) If you like to step up and tank raids, throw up a post and be a raid leader. Or if you like to follow, join groups started by others.  We have the forum space to post info like that.

In essence, we are providing a platform from which a guild will form and evolve naturally. People will invite friends and players they meet in game, and it will grow.  It won't be a "recruit spam in general chat" type guild either. The people concerned will be the ones dictating their preferred play style.

The thing that matters most to me is enjoying a game with my friends from Gaiscioch, and that to me trumps structure, a race to progress and endgame epics.

Players should be coming in with the attitude of "What can I bring to the guild" rather than "What will the guild bring to me".  That will naturally foster a sense of community and mutual enjoyment of a great game.

Hopefully that answers your question, I hope nobody is disappointed :)

I'm not a raider, so end-game raiding never entered my mind when I wrote the above.  I'm a lot like Fog in that regard, as a matter of fact, if (like RIFT) raiding becomes the only thing left to do in FFXIV, then that will be the time when I move on to something else.  I'm not saying I won't raid on a casual basis if needed, but I won't actively seek it out.  Been there, done that, had my fill w/several years of Everquest.  I'm thinking more about community stuff, similar to what we do w/ GW2.  There seems to be a LOT of story potential with this game.

"In essence, we are providing a platform from which a guild will form and evolve naturally. People will invite friends and players they meet in game, and it will grow.  It won't be a "recruit spam in general chat" type guild either. The people concerned will be the ones dictating their preferred play style.

That is pretty much the main answer to my question, that's all I really wanted to know.  I was not present with you folks in RIFT, so I don't really know how the structure was there.  But, I would expect something similar to RIFT, being both games are PVE focused and subscription (RIFT changed to F2P after Fog closed the Chapter).

As far as what I can bring to the guild... heh well that's a long and complicated answer with a sad, pathetic story behind it.  Someday I might tell it, but for now, I'm good with being a retired founder.

I made an edit re community events on a large scale, just in case I had worded it ambiguously.  There is no way we have the resources to do anything like what Ben does with Gaiscioch.  If we wanted to do that, we would do it in GW2!

I agree with Hex's approach and I am looking forward to some casual yet effcient dungeons.  I take it you are going with the white Mage? I plan on going tank but to be honest I haven't beta tested or read much yet on the game.  All the excitement I have read on the guild forums has me stoked again and I hope we can evolve into something close to what we had in Rift. Those raids and expert dungeons were some of the most pve fun I have had.  My big concern right now is that I am building a house right now and plan on moving right around the time the game releases.  The house is out of civilization, kind of, so I am nervous on what my Internet service will be....

To put some questions to bed, I can provide you with the following information:

Q: How will an "unofficial branch" of a gaiscioch family game work?

A: Like every other branch, a few thing's will be different, such as guild naming convention and rank structure

Q: How is this different from a Saighdear?

A: Very, there is no official requirements, the system is more fluid, but in that - it does not mean it will internally be unstructured or willy nilly! I am an Elder and regardless of supported officially or not, I still have a Duty to my family as well as a responsibility to represent us, even outside of official sanctions, as Gaiscioch would expect to be represented

Q: Will there be events? Community Involvement?

A: Absolutely! Everything you know about what we do will be similar in game. There just may not be as much official sanction behind it.

It total, this really is a normal run, but it's also more adult, we wont be holding hands and each player will be responsible for handling there own. We are here as family to support, but ultimately, you play as you see fit. It is my and Hex's job to ensure that fire's are kept at bay, and to provide insight and support to the family when it's needed. We will have officers (of sort) to assist new players, and help with coordinating event's in game.

I hope this puts alot of questions to rest, feel free to post any additional you may have, I'm happy to answer them!

One thing to add to that.  With regards to invites, we plan to set permissions so you can invite your friends and family.  We do not plan to spam general chat with recruit spam, and figure people will use their discretion when inviting.  That way a "friends of friends" community will evolve slowly but surely.

Thank you Connor, that's the information that I was after.  I haven't done a good job of wording what I was trying to ask, but your information covered it. I'm not looking for GW2 structure or website support, but was hoping for something more structured than the F2P Saighdears, since its a subscription game.

Just to note, at one time I would have stepped up and offered to lead a game like this, although it would have been under my own brand, but ... after all my work and massive failure with trying to resurrect Waelwulfas in SWTOR, I just don't have it in me anymore to want to lead anything.  That didn't just suck the wind out of my sails, it ripped off the mast and plunged it down to the bottom of the ocean.  I'm struggling as it is with leading little events in GW2.

Anyway, ty folks for the information, I'm still in.  :)

I'm all for the structure, or organic growth, as it may be called. I'm not much of a raider myself anymore (i was pretty hardcore in wow) and I can't say I won't ever raid, because I love it, but I hate for it to be a requirement.

That being said, as I stated before kind of. I am tired of trying to find a good guild to settle into when I switch games and I am just glad the family members have a broad scope of interests too! You guys have answered the few questions I had as well, even though I figured i would just "roll with it".

Guild wars is still fun and I love it, it's just easier for me to drop on account of the lack of subscription. If I stay past my 30 days in ffxiv, I will probably be on pretty regularly, because well it's just going to be awesome :)

and I can get Shane to join too, because it's not officially Gaiscioch, so he doesn't have to be scared!

Wonderful gate. It WOULD be a shame if someone blew a giant hole in it. -- Canach
