Anthony M Davis, our Quarterback served in the U.S. Navy as a AW Rescue Swimmer from 2000 to 2006 on the USS Abraham Lincoln. While he was stationed in San Diego driving home in 2005 he was in a car accident where he was thrown from the vehicle. He woke a month later in the Seattle Washington, VA Hospital with a 100% disability and a 99% chance of permanent paralysis.
18 months later, Anthony started walking by using the pain in his feet to indicate when to throw his legs forward. Pain was his guide, his friend and his helper. It was from this pain that Anthony learned to not only walk but also run again. He has no feeling below his waist but he can feel pain. He also raised his son at the same time as battling his condition.
In 2009, Anthony was invited to the Military Paralympic Camp where he gained interest for Rowing. They recruited him and assigned him a coach and his first race 2 months after learning how to row timed in at 12 seconds faster than the top time in the Beijing Olympics. After that he rowed in 3 races in Portland in 2010 and in April of 2011 he went to Oklahoma City to train for the U.S. National Rowing Team. He raced in Princeton and took first place solidifying his place on the U.S. National Rowing Team. From there he went to the World Championships in Adaptive Rowing where he placed 9th in the world.
Today Anthony continues to row, runs marathons, hand cycles and plays Quarterback for both the Casual and Competitive Gaiscioch Flag-Football program. He is an outstanding example of courage and perseverance in which all of the Gaiscioch strive for. He is an inspiration to us all, and is a major part of our team. It also helps that he can throw a football over 65 yards accurately. All of this without feeling anything below his waist.
