Someone mentioned it in another thread, but the "Family Name" context may not have been correctly translated. I was playing with it this weekend, and Family name is not a surname. It is the name that you are globally identified as, to all other players. Kind of like Sekkerhund.3792 for GW2, or @Sekkerhund for Elder Scrolls Online.
Just something to keep in mind, if you either still have yet to make, or would like to re-do yours. We have until the 27th to make changes, then it's locked until Live and since they didn't activate the Reserved Names for CBT2, I have no idea if our choices will be automatically tied to our login, or not.
I have no idea how it will work, so to be safe, make any changes before the 27th.
so for instance if you are talking in global or guild chat it is your family name that is displayed?
By "global" I mean the infrastructure of the game, itself.
I have no idea what name it gives for the Chat systems, but I would assume it uses your character name, like most other games do. If I remember correctly, ESO only shows your @Name for your guild chats, but not sure if BDO does that or not.
I was assuming it would use your character name - the placement of the family name before the character name though caused me to choose something different than I had originally thought out because it just didn't look right to me in game. Seemed more of a prefix name than family name (I know the lexical order of names in the East is different than the West but I hadn't considered what that would look like to me initially when choosing.) ESO's guild chat always messed me up.
Got the name Yamilse Phelan on reserve (female version of my old GW2 and ESO name :-P
One example is how it tracks and interacts with your friends. If you want to track a friend, via various systems that I noticed, it uses the Family name, not character name. So if your toon's name is Sally and your family name is Struthers, then people have to use Struthers, to interact with you via various systems within the game.
So for you, Faye, if you wanted everyone to recognize you from the global (account) names that you used for GW2 and ESO, then you would choose Trixilly as your Family name for BDO, then you can name your characters whatever and everyone will be able to locate and interact with you as Trixilly. and not have to track all of your character names (assuming you make more than one, eventually).
