Leading To Victory In A No Win Battle.

By: Eluveittie

There are many difficult things to be overcome when leading others. Fear of failure, desertion of those who were once willing to follow, being branded an incompetent leader. All of these can lead to a disastrous outcome. The real trick to leading is to LISTEN to what your followers want, OBSERVE the reality of your given situation, STRATEGY for possible outcomes and TACT for handling things beyond your control. So yes to be a leader you must be LOST.

After much reflection and having seen the goings on in the guild regarding the way things are done; I took it upon myself to host events due to the lack of scheduled events posted on the guild website. I tried different workshops such as helping others with the puzzles in game and how to achieve the Calweddi citizen achievement. Turn out was small with a handful of people showing up. My personal schedule had much to do with this as I usually am only on during the weekends and Wednesday afternoons. None the less I LISTENED to what my guild mates were saying and OBSERVED what had to be done. With the onset of Rift 4.0 a whole new zone and vast opportunities presented themselves. I formed a STRATEGY of what I could do and how it would benefit others. The SFP Grind was born and the turn out was a success my fellow guild mates and I had shared goals and objectives I could easily deliver. We were all getting the objectives we wanted met and we were having fun doing it.

Though, with all things we outgrew the SFP Grind and trips to the crater to kill mobs, close rifts and, kill end bosses for zone events soon passed to the wayside. I had to think and act fast and fell back on what I had OBSERVED. TD also required multiple trips to obtain upgrade requirements for gear drops and those ever elusive engines. Again we were happy killing away and learning but now we were becoming too strong. Some went off on their own and tried their hands on harder content such as IROTP and golum farming. Trying to maintain 10 guild mates to sign up and show was becoming more difficult as many of the slots had to be filled with PUGS.

The demands of the PUGS were not always met with the best results. Trying to fill a progression group with 80% guild and the rest PUG to include the tank is just asking for a migraine. None the less TACT in handling what you can't control is key to success.

TACT takes time and wisdom to master and even then when you think you have it down someone or something throws you a curve-ball and it hits you square in the nose at 100mph.
First remain calm and acknowledge the situation this allows your followers to know you are aware of the giant poo storm about to rain down.
Second go back to LISTEN and OBSERVE 9 times out of 10 your followers already give you the solution the other times you come up with the STRATEGY for yourself.
Third if the solution is easy you implement it if not offer your followers several choices and let them choose. That is a key to being successful in TACT.

Now with the onset of 4.2 TACT is going to be more important in leading since, we have come back full circle to the dilemma of leadership. One person can provide the same event over and over. However, as people come and go more PUGS fill the slots and they want things done like clockwork with results yesterday. TD is going to become harder and harder to fill unless, we can fill the entire group as a guild with no PUGS. Once the word gets out that TD runs are a wipe fest we are done. This is where I employ TACT and lay it out before you.

To continue TD runs we need the following.

#1 All 10 slots filled by guild members.

#2 Class leaders for Warrior, Rogue, Primalist, Cleric, and Mage. We have people with wrong gear, wrong specs and, bad macros. We don't make the DPS or know the best way to use our characters. At least 2 roles should be known by every player. With class leaders in guild we can work on getting people where they need to be and geared accordingly.

#3 Workshops hosted by others on builds and marcos. The builds are then, field tested in dungeons and honed to a razor sharp edge so every player can perform as needed.

#4 More support from the higher ups in guild. The more leaders we have involved in Rift the more the guild prospers. If the current leaders are not available use your mentors if you have one. If not ask questions and I will do what I can to get you pointed in the right direction if you want to try leading.

#5 More events. You are the key to our success. Use your knowledge and know how and share it with others. Be it showing the new guys how to do stuff and host leveling events or dungeon runs. The more you LISTEN and OBSERVE the more opportunities you can find and use in your STRATEGY for success.

Lastly as a leader your attitude and candor speak volumes to your TACT. In time you will see others place trust in your abilities and even seek your consul when they have a query. Remember to be fair and not use your position for self gain. That's how you become a dictator or worse a crooked politician.

Even if we can't get the class leads and the other things we need. I will continue to host the TD grind and fill it with PUGS if need be. I will adjust for fire and take only those who are patient enough to handle a progression guild run and; if we can only down 1 boss out of 4 that's still a chance for someone to get a piece of gear or a much needed engine. To some it will seem a no win battle but, if you see things from a leaders perspective you will understand the reasoning for taking on such tasks that others would see futile.

See you on the field of battle!
