Giving “A Warm Welcome In The Nick Of Time”

By: Vampiresbane

Boy it seems like eons ago to me when Craythur and I met. Arguably in a way it was the real “beginning” of my Warhammer career. I had previously played Destruction on a different server as a 40 sorceror, got so angry once I had found myself doing pve to get gear to pvp that I quit. I had done similar things in WoW and had vowed never to do it again. At the time, most players were doing Bastion Stairs and the various city dungeons to get geared up. The thing that set it off was that I had signed up earlier that week to join 5 others to do a dungeon at 6pm PST. Well I had been playing off and on that day to gain renown and had taken a break at 4:30pm or so. When I had come back at 5:30pm, they had already gotten 6 players and started. I went ballistic. Just nuts. Anger and curse words just poured out of my mouth. When I had calmed down a bit (keywords: a bit), I had realized, yknow it’s really not a big deal what they had done. Sure enough it was stupid and disrespectful, but I shouldn’t have acted the way I had. I realized my biggest issue was that I was once again doing a pve grindmill in order to do pvp and had decided to quit WAR and not only that, but do something I had never EVER done before in any mmo. I erased my 40 sorcerer. I erased all my other characters. Just completely got rid of anything WAR. I did it to prevent myself from ever coming back.

Well time passed. I believe I had quit in December of 2008. I think I came back officially to WAR in August of 2008. So I stayed away from mmo’s for 8 months which is pretty big for me because I love these games. The thing that made me come back, besides the idea of fighting other human controlled characters, was the keep sieges and warfare. It was something I had ALWAYS, ALWAYS loved in my short stint of doing DAOC. It was something I had never ever forgotten. No other game had that. Sure in WoW you can kill people, but you can’t kill people while defending ramparts and gatehouses while pouring oil down their throats! If you could be in love with a game, I had been in love with DAOC and WAR.

We had just had a bad breakup.

So I eventually came back because of my need to smash face while defending a castle. No one has ever known this, but I actually came back as my “current” brightwizard, Friarn Brimstone who is level 30 currently. I think I played him until level 28 when I started seeing a lot of roleplaying advertisements on Destruction and Order side for guilds. While with my original Friarn, I played with a guild called “Knights of Order” or something like that, but right about when I was getting into T4, most of their leadership rerolled to play “Darkfall.” I tried Darkfall for two days and quit. The guild that I had previously joined suddenly turned from a happy go lucky guild in WAR to a “1337” guild on Darkfall. Way too serious for me. Required me to play way too many hours. It was time to part ways.

This was back when Phoenix Throne was alive and I decided…wth…I’ll reroll as a choppa and roleplay him. So I deleted the original Friarn.

I found I loved roleplaying. I never really had done it, but roleplaying as an orc was FANTASTIC. Tons of fun. Problem was the Destro roleplaying guild was terr a bull. Just crap. Utterly worthless. So I would have about an hour or so of fun roleplaying while in T1 or T2 and then “come home” to the guild and be utterly disappointed. I tried contacting other roleplaying guilds, but it was pretty dismal as well. Sure they roleplayed, but their community was really bad. So I started looking around again. I liked PT on Order side so I wanted to go back there, but I need a “home.” I don’t remember if I started Vampiresbane before or after I contacted Ben (Daghdre). I’m fairly sure I made him right after I emailed Ben so I could lead better. At the time, I knew enough about WAR that I knew a healer can really make or break a warband in T2/T3.

(Now I know in T4 it’s more so about having a good BW or Eng leader to lead 24 guys, but it can still be done by other players. Totally an aside comment, but from what I’ve seen, since aoe BW’s and Magnet Spec Engie’s dps can totally dictate a city fight or orvr fight, the BEST 24 man’s I’ve been apart of were led by these guys. Tanks being a good second. Healers ie me should not be charging head long into zergs. But that’s what you need in big fights. The leader SHOULD be the one charging first, tank or aoe dps.
I still wouldn’t redo it all over as an Engie or BW however simply because I love my Warrior Priest. Just utterly love him. He’s tremendously important due to his heals, can tank like 3 or so Destruction, and just looks like a BMF.)

What started the email was me looking through the guild recruitments on the PT forums on WAR forums. I had found Ben’s post about weekly T2 and T3 events and I was like…. “Wha? This can’t be…..No way. Really? That’s what I’ve wanted since day 1 of Ultima Online…..That’s what made me fall in love with mmo’s.” I immediately had flashbacks of when suddenly the town crier shouted “zombies and undead appearing in graveyards all over Ultima! Hurry!” and everyone and their random packmule rushing to go smash undead skulls. Granted this was a tad different. It was a scheduled event, fighting other players, but it was still weekly events where you knew:
#1 Something/Someone had to die.
#2 People would be there.
#3 Something/Someone had to die.

But something still was missing. The chance to roleplay still tugged at me.

Players were still trying to set up roleplaying events. And Sigmar be damned I wanted to give it another shot. I remember that the event Craythur and I eventually met was actually a T1 event, not T2. It was being hosted by a Destro side guild (this part I’m not sure about) and I had volunteered to host it Order side with a runepriest, Rumpleralph. Rumpleralph actually stills exists as he did when that day had all ended, a level 4. I keep him because he reminds me of how well this day eventually played out and that I was glad to have met Craythur.

So Rumpleralph and his staff in hand, I ran around T1 that day an hour beforehand recruiting players for the T1 rp event. It was supposed to be a Greenskin vs Dwarf roleplaying fight. Over and over I spammed general chat and rvr chat. I even went to Altdorf a few times. I had a handful of Order join me (total of six or so), one I think was MacReady (Cray’s engie). I’m fairly confident this was the character he was on since I don’t think he made another engineer. We tried our best for like 2 or 3 hours to find Greenskin in the Greenskin/Dwarf T1 rvr lakes. Found like two. The ENTIRE time. The official time for the roleplaying event came and went. The six or so of us eventually broke character and started talking about the server, our mains, and what have you. I admitted that I was disappointed at this event’s turnout, but that I really loved the guild/alliance I was in because my young warrior priest always had something to look forward to, plenty of skull smashing and the like. MacReady inquired about the guild and we chatted about it for awhile. Eventually Mac said his main was a runepriest by the name of Craythur and I said we’d give this another ½ hr or so and I would guild invite him. We stuck around for a little bit more, insulted the T1 Greenskin Champ guards a bit more about their “mothers” and headed home. I then logged on Vampiresbane and invited Craythur.

Welcomes came out from every corner. Ben’s usual welcome was sounded. Personally for me when this had all happened to me, I was extremely shy. I’m not big on huge welcomes. Just hand me a hammer and tell me where the fighting is. Little did I know how absolutely essential this was to Craythur and probably many others. (At some point in the future, I may have to help Clanorton do some roleplaying events like he does every Monday. I won’t be an orc, but it’ll still be fun. Man those were the days.) I am still so very happy I came here. I’ve led many a battles since then, welcomed many more players into this family, and loved almost every minute of it.

I look forward to meeting you, the new player, that I have never met and help give you a similar version of what I’ve gone through.

NOW GO SMASH SOME HEADS YOU LAZY LOUT! I’VE SEEN GREENSKIN ‘SHROOMS DO MORE DAMAGE! THERE’LL BE NO BUGMANS FOR YOU THIS ‘EVE IF YOU DON’T GET OUT ‘ERE!
