As I write this, Excalibur is open for new character creations (I just created another one of mine that I've been waiting since pre-Launch to create). If you know someone who has been waiting, call them ASAP, or do whatever you need to, I don't know how much longer it will be open, but they have implemented a 30m autolog-out timer as of this latest patch, so they'll probably be monitoring the server load throughout the day.
Emergency Maintenance for 2 hours from the time of this post , go go go after that!
A friend of ours will be coming but with digital sales down, I don't know how quick he could get the game off a shelf before it is closed again :/
It's too late, my son has leveled his character on Gilgamesh and doesn't want to re start, and I have started a new toon there last week to be with him and we have slotted into the role play community and made friends. I do still have my character on Excalibur and can pop on now and then but it won't be my main.
However, if when transfers start he is willing to move that will be a possibility for us to rejoin you guys, and if not then I will be with you all in future games, once Gaiscioch always Gaiscioch!!
I would not count on transfers to Excalibur at all. Excalibur is one of the most popular and most populated NA/EU servers and the odds that they'll ever allow transfers TO Excalibur are slim and next to none.
Transfers FROM Excalibur? Yea, I'm sure that they will allow that when they begin the transfer service this month.
Transfers TO Excalibur... If new character creations on Excalibur get stopped again, you can well bet they definitely won't allow transfers to Excalibur, paid or not.
Regardless of new character creation status, I just don't think they'll allow it for a long while, not after all this crap and what they've said about server stability.
As of the time of my update (7:30am PDT), they've already shut down New Character Creations on most of the Japanese servers.
However, the NA/EU servers are still ALL open, so MACH SCHNELL if you've been waiting to get a character created. I suspect they'll start shutting off NA/EU server new creations, sometime later today, based on how fast the Japan servers were shut off.
I just created three characters on the server. :) Been waiting for it to open up without going too far on a character I had on Ixion. Looks like they've closed Moogle already, may be closing others soon...
Can't get in at all now...says worlds are undergoing maintenance.
Like I said Sekker, we are settled over there now anyway so we are not 'counting on' transferring, and I'm not sure we would transfer even if we could at this point. Transfers will be available to Excalibur some time in the future because when the next new shiny mmo comes out server populations will change, but that will be a long way in the future. It is fine, we will be with you guys in future games anyway :)

No worries Shae, I was prepared to move off Excalibur if my best friend couldn't create here, so I understand. Best of luck to you folks there. :)

Closed again... heh yea, I was just informed by a friend that Excalibur is one of the few NA servers that is now closed to new character creations, so I checked the update list and ... well that's the bad news.
The good news is that ALL of the Japanese servers look to be open again (they were almost all closed this morning, as I reported above), so we might see another window of opportunity for Excalibur in the next day or two. I would recommend checking during the NA/EU off-hours, if possible.
Digital Sales - I've also had reports that some retail stores are getting retail box copies of the game (both PC and PS3), so folks may want to consider going that route if they want to try to get in ASAP. I expect that SE will open things up once they release the digital sales, which I imagine should be within the next week or so. Its hurting them to keep digital download sales shut down, as those are higher profit sales than the retail box copies.
My personal opinion and suggestion? I'd wait until the dust settles, if I were in the position of not having the game yet. There are a ton of great games to play, I currently have 17 installed that I dabble with, so the time will fly until this massive overcrowding and player rush begins to diminish.
Unfortunately, this massive player rush seems to have also postponed their planned content releases. I haven't seen official word, but it looks like almost all of their resources are devoted to trying to maintain stable servers and play traffic controllers. Has anyone seen a Dev comment about whether or not Patch 2.1 is still on schedule?
Glad your friend was able to roll with us Sekk. Shae, I wish you well on your adventures. Such a shame your son could not roll on Excalibur :( Now that everything has died down there are no queues to speak of and log ins are very smooth.

I just managed to create a character.
Seems we still have some windows of opportunity going on. Seems the get up a bit early before going to work time frame for NA people looks the best deal in at least creating the character. After that, as Hex said the logging in at any time of day isn't bad at all. Worse I had since they fixed that is a 2 minute queue last night at just past 8pm eastern time.
Was thinking of a second character only as a change of pace as far as type of toon I was looking at and well more retainer space! Though I'm not sure you can mail between toons on the same account though a swap in and out of our FC chest would work if I did decide to go this route though it means all the fun leveling on the story again with a new toon. HA! Though I would start in a different town so some of it would be different for the first 15 levels. ;) Just me and my silly ideas and I must try it all out deal. At least alt-itis can be accomplished on one toon too. ;) Still wouldn't mind more retainer space and a lalafel to look at from time time besides my kitty. Hehe. And still really loving this game because there is a LOT to it. Not even bored with crafting even it gets interesting trying to level everything once around L20ish as it takes more work to get stuff. =)
Excalibur is up right now for character creation! The husband and I finally made it on!
They have a list now that is updating about every 4 hours. Just open the patcher and it is the first news story (at least for right now).
Character creation is still open on Excalibur as at the time of this post.

Wife and I are still waiting on digital sales to resume. Hopefully when they do we'll be able to get chars on same server. We've been looking forward to rejoining a Gaiscioch guild.
I'll keep an eye out for it to open again. Just about to hit 30 with my tank on the other server.

Hmm, that copy and paste didn't work. But Excalibur is open for character creation!
That's good to see. I've noticed that some of the lower level zones seem a bit more vacant that it used to be, wondering if the free trial period extensions are done, or if people decided to move forward with their classes and not backtrack to a new class as much.
Wife and I got the game today finally. Unfortunately Excalibur wasn't open for creation so we made some chars on a different server. Will watch for it to open up on Excalibur. If not, hopefully we'll be able to do some kind of transfer there in the future, at least I hope so. We've really missed playing with people from this guild.
I got onto Excalibur a few days ago. Can I get a guild invite? char name: Cuth Anu
Your best bet to get an invite is to get into RaidCall and ask someone in the FF XIV channel. That or run into someone in Echoes in-game, since anyone can invite.
You'll find toon creation is turned off during NA prime time, so check early mornings for North America (EST seems to be the control time zone) and/or late night PDT, its been consistently open during those periods.
