I planted this seasons tomato plants this past weekend.  (hoping for some rain now)  If you live in southeastern Michigan Grayes Greenhouse, https://www.facebook.com/pages/Grayes-Greenhouse/157688424263782 has 41 varieties this year.  Any more gardeners out there?  The six I choose were:

  • Arkansas Traveler - Pink, 7oz. low acid fruit, flavorful, heirloom variety
  • Bloody Butcher - Early bearing, high yield.  3-6oz. fruit
  • German Johnson - Pink and meaty, low acid.  12-24oz fruit
  • Caro Rich - Orange globe, 7-10oz. beefsteak, very high beta-carotene, sweet, low-acid
  • Brandywine - Legendary, Large fruit 1-1/2 lbs. wine-colored flesh. Amish heirloom
  • Old German - Huge yellow fruit w/red exterior.  Tasty, one of the best ever for slicing

I like to plant romas and some beefsteak tomatoes every year in pots. I also do fresh herbs which are great if you enjoy cooking and that I do. I usually grow basil and oregano along with parsley and some mint for iced tea and Mojitos which is a nice refreshing summer drink. I did some Jalepeno peppers last year and got a few plants going again this year also. Thats about the extent of it for me.

Each year Grayes has many tomato varieties. She also offers "extras", which are the extra plants of varieties that people special order or supply seed for her to start. This way each year there are always new ones that I have never seen or heard of before. Cooking, canning, pickling...oh my! And bring on the bacon, BLT's for everyone.

Sounds great. Nothing like home grown produce.
