Mage Pyrobringer

This is currently the best mage dps spec in the game, and will be after 2.2 as well. It is melee but supposedly works ok with some disconnects.

Taken from http://exploitguild.net/pages.php?s=9b3a3220f5f4b2ed9ac4da54eb842889dfe17de0&page=Pyrobinger

1) What is Pyrobinger?
Pyrobinger is a Pyromancer-Harbinger Hybrid which takes advantage of Harbingers strong slashing attacks and spending armour procs on super fast Fireballs. Also a lot of strong Pyro things are mixed in making for great single target.
This is a melee build, but can handle lengthy ranged disconnects and many disconnects with very little DPS drop if you play well. It also has passable (but not great) AoE cleaving with Lucent slash spam.

2) What is the DPS Value?

Currently I cannot find anything which legitimately parses higher. It parses consistently around 1000+ higher than our top ranged DPS specs. It is good at target switching and disconnects, has a ton of survivability talents and cool-downs for burst phases.

3) Point Spread

44Pyromancer 32Harbinger - Target switching variant - Recommended spec

41Pyromancer 33Harbinger 2Elementalist - Roughly 300+ more DPS, but less at target switching. Also loses 700 health from not having Searing Vitality. Usually you'll go with option one

Reasoning of talent choices:

-Why not take Flame Sigil? We would be trading 2% of our overall multiplicative damage (Glyph of Power point) for 10(20)% damage 2/3 of the time for half of our damage which is Fire damage. Theoretically it would be marginally worth it if it was not for the fact it takes up a GCD using Prime again. It's simply bad, and forces a Prime consumption, thus hindering you on target switching

-We lose 3% slashing damage to gain 8% run speed and in-combat Blade Rush. Swap points if you wish for more DPS but less utilty

-The point in Fire Armour helps with surviving lethal AoE in the new raids. You can change it to Fire Storm for a ranged AoE (though it's less DPS than Lucent Slash+armour proc spam) or place it as you see fit

4) The Concept of Pyrobingers DPS Rotation

Slashes hit hard and are on a 1 second GCD (Global cool-down). Slashes can proc your Eldrich Gift - Eldrich Gift is a temporary buff which makes your next cast time spell instant (if under 2.5s cast, i.e. does not work on Cinderbust), and makes the GCD of this cast only 0.5 seconds. 0.5 second Fireball nukes are extremely powerful, DPS wise, hence we want to maximise our chances of proccing Eldrich Armor.

How do we do this? Surely it is as simple as slashing and spending procs on Fireballs as we get them right? Wrong. It is not that simple. We still have important Pyro things to keep maintained such as Combust, Countdown and Flame Volley. These abilities are worth using DPS wise, but they are not slashes and hence don't proc Eldrich Gift. Hence we lose out on uber Fireball procs from using it at inopportune moments.

Is there an ideal time to use non-slashing abilities? Yes. During the ICD (internal cool-down) of Eldrich Gift. The ICD is 3 seconds. This means the next two seconds cannot proc Eldrich Gift with Slashes. Hence this is the best time to use your highest DPS non-slashing abilities without disturbing the potential of possible Eldrich procs for more DPS. Note that this is in an ideal world. In reality, you will occasionally be using non-slashing moves (example : emergency Flame bolt to save combust dropping) outside of the GCD and hence lose possible procs.

5) Rotation spells:

I'm adding this section as a lot of new players won't necessarily know all of the spells and I think it's better to understand why your rotation works to be any good at Rift DPS. Feel free to skip this part

  • Flame Bolt - Boosts your damage by 10%. Adds/refreshes Combust. Must be used at minimum every 8 seconds to keep up Combust, but is a DPS gain over some slashes during the ICD of EG(Eldrich Gift)
  • Countdown- 8 second timer, 8 second cool-down. It ticks down and explodes. It does more damage dependent on Combust stacks on the target when it explodes. This is why it is important not to let your Combust stacks fall off. Note that this I has not been macroed for several reasons. One being that Heatwave will mess you up with its reset
  • Fireball - Hard hitting casted nuke. 60% chance to add Combust Made instant and used with Eldrich Armour procs. Fireball can also proc Wildfire. Wildfire is a buff which grants 3 Flame Bolts to cast as well as resetting the cool-down on Flame Bolt
  • Combust - DoT which stacks up to 5 times and is applied by Prime(x5), Flame Bolt(x1) and Fireball(60%)
  • Inferno - hard hitting instant nuke only available when the target is sub 30%. Used during the ICD of ED if Combust is refreshed and Flame Bolt buff has just been refreshed
  • Prime - adds 5 Combust. Target switch? Derped and Combust dropped? Use this
  • Withering Flame - Best used for bursting down quick target switches in conjunction with Prime. This combination will perform better than putting up lots of DoTs and debuffs which means you will not have enough time to have been worth it.
  • Blazing Light - ranged Life DoT(damage over time), only needs to be applied once as it can be refreshed with Lucent Slash. I note that it is a Life DoT because non-slashing, non-Fire spells in this spec have a 1.5 second GCD. Hence it is very very bad if you let this drop off rather than refreshing for free with Lucent Slash
  • Flame Volley - Extremely powerful 3 second damage channel, with the most powerful tick at the end. Best used during Flaring Power, after you've just refreshed your Combust, Countdown and Blazing Light to avoid them dropping off during the cool-down. Use Heatwave to reset this cool-down
  • Blade Rush - standard gap closer, use if you run out of range things to maintain on disconnects and need to get back into melee range faster. Avoid using if possible, it does not hit much damage
  • Slashing spells (these will proc Eldrich Gift, they are much more simplistic, rotation wise, and are mostly macroed, think of it as basic buff/DoT upkeep and fillers):
  • Piercing Beam - 30 second debuff, makes the target take 11% more damage from slashes. Must be kept up. You can let it drop if your next attack will not be a Slash however. Example: You are about to need to do a Flame Bolt, Countdown and Flame Volley. Do not worry about the Piercing Beam about to expire, you can do it after.
  • Lucent Slash - Weak Slash, not worth it over your main spam slash for single target unless you are using it to refresh your Blazing Light. This is very important and must be done roughly every 15 seconds. This is also your best AoE in the spec for 5 targets
  • Storms Fury- Big damaging Slash. Simple
  • Vorpal Slash- Big damaging DoT type slash. Simple because its duration DoT but 8s cool-down so there's no maintainence outside of a filler mash macro
  • Storm Slash - the no-cooldown slash which you'll spam much of your time while waiting for ED procs and things to refresh
  • Lightning Strike (second spec variant) - simply a big nuke for spending ED procs on
  • Cinderburst. Very powerful Pyromancer spell. But it has a shockingly long cast time of 6 seconds. Hence it is usually only used with Eldrich Armour procs during Heatwave, as its cast time is reduced by 2.5 seconds + 50% respectively, making it a 0.5second cast time. I.e. we can do one Cinderburst per minute with Pyrobinger.

6) Buffs

  • Eldrich Armour (does not stack with other armours, so do not think about putting Pyro or Fire armour on your bar)
  • Lightning Blade - Slashes deal extra damage, non slashes have a chance of dealing extra damage
  • Glyphs of Power - Increases mana regen and damage by 15% while standing still. This means, when you are doing your first few DoTs from ranged on the pull, do not run while moving, but rather runstop+instantcast-runduringGCD-stop+instantcast- etc until you are in melee range of your target. Obviously move faster if you have to avoid mechanics or stack up fast or run out of ranged things you need to use
  • Flaring Intellect - Does not stack with Bard Fanfare of Power, but keybind it so that you can use it outside of groups/raids with support.

7) In-Combat toggles/cool-downs

  • Charged Blade. This charge toggle boosts Slashing damage by 20% and consumes 5 charge per cast, and boosts non slashing damage by 10% and allows the spells to grant charge gain. This means, you will gain/remain at max charge as long as you spend ED procs on Fireballs, combined with the non-slashing spells in your rotation granting charge. This also means you have a lot of excess charge that can be spent on other things if you wish to optimise your DPS output...
  • Internalise Charge. This charge toggle is talented for 19% increased damage. It consumes charge in use and does not stack with Charged Blade. The obvious benefit here is an additional 9% damage to your Countdowns and Flame Volley. Note that toggling charge toggles takes time (miliseconds), hence it is a DPS loss to be doing it if your reaction time is slow and hence slowing down your rotation. Stick to Charged Blade if you cannot handle it. Do not even attempt to toggle it on and off for 0.5s gcd armour procs on Fireball, you will not gain enough charge to sustain it, and you will probably lose DPS from toggle time
  • Heatwave - Resets cool-down of all Fire abilities (the only one of note in this spec is Flame Volley) and halfs the time of all Fire casts. This means you can spam 1s cast time Fireballs. Sure they hit more than your Storm Slashes, but they do not proc 0.5s GCD Fireballs and hence are a DPS loss. Decent for using on melee disconnect burst phases though

8) The Basic DPS Rotation

Opening: (assuming stating at range from the boss mob, on the pull as tank is running in)

[Fireball] >

As you are running to melee range:

Countdown >; Prime(if 44/32) > Blazing Light >

In melee range:

Piercing Beam* > Slash macro until an ED proc* comes or something needs to be refreshed

ED Proc:

Fireball + Flame Bolt if available (basic)

Some further notes/additions:

Flame Bolt is used at least once per 8 seconds in order to keep up Combust and Improved Flame Bolt buff. Do not let Combust fall off. Ever. Bad Mage, y u let combust drop??

Lucent Slash is used to refresh Blazing Light before it falls off. Do not let Blazing Light drop off and force a 1.5s GCD on its refresh. This is huge. If you forget to refresh with Lucent and have to manually reapply Blazing Light you lose a free slash which deals damage, you lose an extra 0.5 seconds of possible damage considering it is not a slash and you lose a chance of a 0.5s Fireball

Countdown is kept up regardless of ICD but is prefered to be used during ICD

Flame Volley. Use this on cool-down. The best starting time to use it is after your first set of Combust/Blazing Light/Countdown refreshes, preferably during Flaring Power. Preferably used during ICD but do not wait too long with it. Use it again with a Heatwave(off GCD) reset as soon as you can without letting important things fall off the target

Heatwave is used to reset Flame Volley, it also reduces the cast time of Fire abilities by 50%. Hence Cinderbust can be used once per Heatwave with an Eldrich Gift proc instead of Fireball

9) Managing the ICD in your rotation for maximum DPS output

As mentioned previously, when you get an Eldrich Gift proc, the next two seconds after using the proc will be Internal cool-down and you cannot proc it again, making it the best moment to use two spells which cannot proc slashes anyway. Hence we have an ICD priority system when you get an ED proc for Fireball:

Flame bolt (if Combust is about to fall off)

V

Countdown (if not currently on mob)

V

Flame Volley (as long as no important things will drop off in 4seconds)

V

Inferno (if target is sub 30%)

V

Storms Fury

V

Vorpal Slash (swap this with Storms Fury if Harbinger crystal)

V

Flame Bolt (if Combust is high and Storms Fury and Vorpal Slash are on cool-down)

This means, basically, after you get a proc and use Fireball, just use Flame Bolt/Countdown. Lol. Min/max if you wish, and only use Flame Bolt if SF/VS are on cool-down, even if it means Wild Fire Flame Bolts go to waste. You are most likely to get an ED proc AT LEAST once every 8 seconds, so using your Flame Bolt once after every ED Fireball is a very good idea as you will maintain your 10% buff and Combust with little thought to it.

10) Macros

#show vorpal slash suppressmacrofailures cast storm’s fury cast vorpal slash cast storm slash cast vengeful shock cast break free

No, you cannot put Countdown in there, because 1) it will make you do a lot less total Fireballs and 2) you will waste GCD's by using Countdown on a mob/add which will die within the next 8 seconds.

#show lightning strike suppressmacrofailures cast lightning strike cast fireball

This macro is for the second spec variant. It just means you'll prioritise Lightning Strike over Fireball while spending ED procs.
