Greetings,

I would like you to know that Gaiscioch loves you guys and we are here if you ever need anything. If there's anything we can do please let us know. I know game development is a volatile industry and can be filled with ups and downs in the blink of an eye but times like these are never easy.

They are however moments when the tide of our lives change, the course we walk develops, and when one door opens a new adventure begins. We hope that your new endeavors will be filled with new learning experiences, challenges, and accomplishments.

On December 17th we planned to mass mail cookies and treats to Trion Worlds but now it seems many of those who deserve them will not be able to receive them. I want you to know that even though we can't get these cookies and treats to you, we truly appreciate all of your hard work. Over the past 2 years your game has brought thousands of us new adventures, memories, and friendships. There is no way to possibly express our gratitude in words. You have our undying appreciation and thanks.

Again if there is anything we can do to help you explore a new path please let us know. We'd be happy to help.

Your faithful fans,

The Gaiscioch Family

Signed,

Benjamin Foley (Foghladha)

RTM milestones are bittersweet. On one hand, you feel great that you got the product finished and out the door, but on the other hand... you just literally worked yourself out of a job. Somehow, its always around Christmas, too. I'd like to say that I miss being in software development, but ugh... I don't miss having to job hunt after every project shipped. @Trion Team: Storm Legion looks great, you guys did some fantastic work with it and you should be proud. Best of luck to those of you who now have to move on; I hope that your next project turns out just as fantastic!

Aye, one never knows who knows someone who knows someone looking for people. I can't tell you how many times I've had a "let me talk to my people and they'll talk to your people and we'll work something out" moment. Or maybe it's just me; I'm a social networker, and I'm not just talking facebook-style! In any case, thank you to the Rift team, and if there is anything I can do to help out those on the hunt for work, I will. Thank you for posting this, Fog. =)

Hopefully Zenimax Online Studios picks up some of them. The developers at Trion would have to be some of the best in the world, if not the best. I've never seen a game so smooth and polished as Rift was in the time that I played it. I wish you all the best in the new year.

Do you think some of the former devs came in and saw this? I hope so. :)

It got passed around their intranet and I had Hal pass it to those that were let go.

Another wave of catastrophic wave of layoffs today :(. 70-80% of their staff. I'm trying to reach out to those that got moved to Defiance and other projects hoping their still gainfully employed. My hearts go out to all of you at Trion. If you need anything that I might be able to help with please contact me. I'd be more than willing to help. http://www.zam.com/story.html?story=32396

Quote from Scott Hartman regarding this newest wave. Could not have said it better myself: "Same as last time - If I can help at all with intros/anything, please find me. This model of game making is so fundamentally broken." Side note, I'm completely eating my words I posted in the past defending Rift and Trion. Kinda bummed.

One of the downsides of me being so well connected in the industry is I can see the storms forming on the horizon and know their coming. It sucks for the developers but the same this is a very exciting thing to happen in a company that we have so many connections in. These people that had a rough day today will go on and join with other developers and then those contacts we have end up being in a dozen more companies. We'll see them again and most likely share additional adventures. All I can do is be able to act before the storm completely wipes out the playerbase. Some people choose to ignore the storm and weather it out, but sometimes weathering it out dissipates the community to the point you almost have to start from nothing again. With the storm that hit warhammer we tried to weather it out. By the time we finally moved to rift there was less than 100 of us left out of 700+. Scott has explained what happened and is happening to the Game Development world. A lot of companies not just Trion are being punished for the failures of others and venture capital companies are panicking and trying to control developers. Taking the wheel from the ships captain when you don't even know how to sail is never a good thing. A lot of developers are moving to crowdfunding to avoid the VC folk trying to drive their products into the ground. We are on the brink of a gaming renaissance and the next few years are going to be both exciting and rough.

Thanks Fog for explaining things. I had no idea some of the things you pointed out about the industry. It will be interesting to see what is in store for the future. @Biv I defended them everywhere I went when people would bad mouth trion as a company, honestly they made an awesome game when it came out and I really enjoyed it's first version. I am saddened to see the company go downhill and the game suffer as well as the people who created it. I hope the future of gaming isn't so bleak, gamers are a lot more fickle and distracted these days. I just want a game I can play with everyone and we can call home and stay for a long time:)

I agree with you Fog, the gaming industry is on the verge of another revolution, indie developers are on the rise, and they are making AMAZING games. A return to "lets make great games for our players" as opposed to the current atmosphere of "lets make games that maximize profits at the expense of lowering innovation and user experience" is something I am greatly looking forward to. I for one would GLADLY contribute to crowd-funding and even another sub-based game if it would ensure the development team would remain in control of their project and continue with the vision they have. VIVA LA REVOLUTION!

Having recently been introduced to Kickstarter (by my brother's KS project, which was recently funded with a few more days to go), I can see the revolution coming. While it's not here yet, KS and similar business models are slowly expanding the ways that companies can make the leap from cool side project to 'hey, I can make a living this way!'

That being said. I wonder if there's enough of the family to help drive and promote developers to our type of game? The Gaiscioch Kickstart Initiative.
