Hey everyone!

One of the biggest questions i hear is "what is this for and how do i spend it". Anyone want to take on currencies and write an article for the magazine listing:

  • all know currencies
  • How to earn
  • How to spend
  • Sample of what you can buy.

Im sure this guide would be a big hit. would need to be written by a seasoned rift player.

I'm actually trying to figure this out. For those who HATE writing, I can do the guide if you help out with posting information you do know here. I used to be seasoned, but I got a bit rusty due to four years away from the game and haven't got my shopping shoes on yet. ;) I do like that you have the same interface window that comes up for shopping whether it is stuff you can get to through the cart on the bottom left menu or have to talk to someone.

Links to other websites with useful information we can compile would be acceptable as well if you are sure of their information yourself.

so let's compile some information and if you really want to write it, go for it. I just offered as I write a lot for our magazine and have done some guides and tours of new game stuff for it.

whenever trion does an expansion in Rift there are some currency changes:  rumor has it plat will be more abundant but items will cost more (COLA? lol).  Raid currency changes with each expansion and trion has been known to get rid of old raid currency/world content currency and replace it with what they deem is appropriate.  Some of the currency forms can be changed to upgrade items, i do hope they don't carry that one of, pvp is painful enough lol. Plat, planarite and favor have been the only currencies that have remained stable.

Fog. I don't consider myself a "seasoned" Rift player, but I'll take a crack at this guide.  I've been studying the Rift currency landscape a bit, and feel I've got a pretty good grasp of it now.  Except for warfronts/PVP... but I can research that.

The Riftgrate guide is quite helpful -- I read it myself when I came back to the game.  While it answers the "what is it?" question for many of the currencies, I don't feel it doesn't answers the most immediate question for many new and returning players: "which is most important to me, personally, based on my level and gameplay?"  I'll take a stab at that part too.

My guide is written and in the Ready to Proof folder of the November 2016 magazine.  Not sure whether there's a better spot for it, feel free to move.

Rift Currencies: What was wrong with the gold standard?

There are at least NINE types of currencies within Rift, each with its own subclasses and usages. Each class can also have multiple types of currency used in specific situations.

DON'T PANIC

The following sections will give a brief overview of what each is for, how to get it, and what it buys.

STORE Currencies

These at primarily use to buy thing from the Rift Store (never from the Auction House)

Credits: Premium currency BOUGHT WITH REAL MONEY from the Rift store and used to buy stuff from the store including upgrades, bonuses and perks not available anywhere else. each credit cost between 1.5 and 1.2 per  penny. (actual money)

Affinity: A special currency given to Patrons. You can earn up to 3 per day based on time played. Affinity allows you to buy stuff ONLY from the Affinity section of the Rift Store. This includes Dimension stuff not found elsewhere, and mounts.

COIN

Good old fashioned GOLD.  100 Silver = 1 Gold, 100 Gold = 1 Platinum    Used at the Auction house, in game merchants at for SOME items in the Rift store. Can also be used at stylist.

SOURCESTONE

Planarite: Earned by defeating common rift incursions in any zone. Used to buy Planar Goods from Planer Merchants in the cities. May also require you to have specific levels of Notoriety in order to purchase higher end gear.

Void Stone: Earned from Zone Events, Carnage Quests, Instant Adventure, Nightmare Rifts and killing rare world creatures. It is also used for planar gear, but also for planar armor.

PvP

Favor: Awarded in PvP and used for PvP gear at the special PvP merchants.

DUNGEONS

Abyssal Crusader's Marks: (there may be other types, I have not done all the major dungeons)  Awarded in Major dungeons and intrepid adventures. Used to purchase raid gar from expert armor merchants.

RAIDS

Fragments of Darkness / Madness: Each raid dungeon tier has its own currency to purchase gear from raid merchants.

CRAFTING

Artisan's / Master Craftsman / Grandmaster Craftsman Marks:  3 tiers of crafting awards (Artisan Green; Master Blue; GM Purple) awarded for successful higher level crafting and mainly  from crafting quests. Used to buy high end recipes.

ARTIFACTS

Lucky Coins: Earned by completing Artifact collections. Buys vanity goods at artifact collectors.

EVENT CURRENCY

Varies by event, for example the Autumn Harvest event has Ambersap. Used to buy lesser event rewards.

This wraps up the overview of currencies in Rift. The important thing to remember is that CREDITS = REAL MONEY.
