Change to Commander Tags

I've been seeing a lot of discussion back and forth on the upcoming change to Commander Tags (account-wide vs. per toon and switchable colors vs. blue).  I'm not going to discuss whether it's worth it to buy a 100g single-toon tag now or wait to buy a 300g/250 BoH tag, or any of the other options folks have discussed.  But I did want to post a link to an official ANet post announcing the change.

In the post, the most important (to my mind) question is answered regarding the change - grandfathering.  Here's the link:

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/big-changes-are-coming-to-the-commander-system/

And here's the specific quote:

"Existing commanders will be grandfathered into this new system. If you’re already a commander, please enjoy this additional upgrade."

As I read that, it means if you already have a 100g single-toon blue only commander tag prior to the change (September 9th I believe), it WILL be upgraded to account-wide multi-color, for no additional fee.

There is also mention on ANet posts that current commanders will receive a (100g per tag) refund for anything above 3 per account.  The below link from a REDDIT thread is an ANet GM reply to a question regarding the change:

http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/2e9p1t/about_the_commander_tags_and_refund_from_support/

The reply says essentially the same as the above post, and adds this regarding a refund:

  • Players who already have consumed a Commander’s Compendium will be upgraded to have all four color tags available for any character on the account. 'Players who consumed more than 3 Commander’s Compendiums – that is, who spent more than the 300 gold cost of the new account-bound tag – will receive an automatic refund via in-game mail with the September 2014 Feature Build.

- Players will not need to submit a ticket to get their gold refund.

I hope that helps clear up any confusion...of course, until the patch actually hits all of this could change.

Regards - Swift
