Elder Scrolls Online doggie
Yesterday's Massively Speaking took Elder Scrolls Online to task for not having an auction house. Normally I would agree, given my long-standing passion for MMO economies and crafting.

So far, though, the lack of an AH hasn't affected my playstyle at all through the first 30 levels. I'm a member of two trading megaguilds as well as my normal guild, and from the inside looking out, there's no difference between selling to thousands of faceless people in your "guilds" or selling to thousands of faceless people via an AH.

I can't say whether ZeniMax purposefully designed ESO's economy this way or simply ran out of the time and money necessary to make an AH. But it doesn't really matter, personally, because my pre-launch expectations amounted to "yet another themepark crapfest," so I continue to be pleasantly surprised by how wrong those expectations were -- even without an AH! What about you, ESO players? Does the game's lack of an AH bother you? Vote after the cut!

Ever wish that you could put to rest a long-standing MMO debate once and for all? Then welcome to the battle royal of Massively's Leaderboard, where two sides enter the pit o' judgment -- and only one leaves. Vote to make your opinion known, and see whether your choice tops the Leaderboard!

As someone who's run in some very small guilds, yes, the lack of AH bothers me to some degree. It's very nice to be in a large guild in this game, mostly for the family and fun, but also for people helping out by sharing items with each other!

Because of the size of our guild and all the great crafters we have - it hasn't affected me.  In GW2 I outfitted 5 lvl 80s from our marketplace so if you want to compare GW2 to ESO - it is about the same for me in "use" of an AH.   Yes, I bought fancy things for the "skins" but thank the Three, I don't need those in ESO.

I think one of the important things ESO got right is that crafted gear is much better than the drops.

+1 for ESO crafted gear.

It's why I never bothered crafting before (until now).  Nothing is more frustrating than jumping through all the hoops to craft an item, only to find out that the quest reward from 10 levels ago still has better stats. Even worse, the item can only be worn on 1 of your alts.

This is why I LOVE ESO.  If I craft an item, I know it will be put to use (on any of my alts).  Crafting is practical and useful.

Crafted items are far superior to quest items and found loot! Yay, finally a real reason to craft...now I just wish it was easier to sell. A single unifies AH would benifit the game because it would help allow for a unified economy. As it is now, prices vary so much from guild to guild it's hard to make money or to have the maximum amount of people looking at your wares. It's like throwing away Ebay and Amazon.com in favor for local newspaper ads. I think they should institute an AH, although it might be too late now. The community is getting used to the hand dealt and they are setting up guilds etc. It should have been done at the start.

Reading through all the comments (and the replies to mine in particular) on that article make me realize just how bad the internet can be at time. this is pretty much how all posters and commentors on the internet think and react these days:
